Taylor Walker to cut off his mullet for charity
Adelaide AFL star Taylor Walker has vowed to finally cut off his iconic mullet - if he can raise $50,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Walker has been ruled out for the season after injuring his ACL last weekend, but he already has a new project for the rest of the year.
Walker has been touched by the story of five-year-old leukaemia sufferer Lily (pictured left), and an 11-year-old who lost her sight due to the illness.
"Whenever I've been thinking about my knee, that's all I've been thinking about - a girl with zero per cent of sight is a lot worse off than what I am," Walker told News Ltd.
"It just puts everything in perspective when something going on in my life is not as dramatic as Lily or the 11-year-old girl."
Walker made a public plea for donations on The Footy Show on Thursday night and at the time of writing, just over 12 hours later, he had already raised almost $30,000.
The man known as 'Tex' is hoping to convince former teammate Ivan Maric to cut of his mullet as well.
"If we raise 50 grand we're going to get it cut," Walker said.
"We're trying to talk big Ivan in to do it as well, but that's a work in progress, so we'll see how we go."
Walker and Maric have famously brought the mullet back to the AFL, with the pair having a bet on who could have the stylish look for the longest.
That was several years ago and neither man has blinked, perhaps due to the high stakes involved.
"Basically it was a $500 bet and the winner gets naming rights to the first child of the loser," Walker's father Wayne said last year.
It was likely Maric's mullet would have bitten the dust later this year in any case, with the Richmond ruckman due to marry his fiancé Erin.
"My fiancé said when we got engaged this year that I'll probably have to cut it off for the wedding," Maric said late last year.
"And I was like, 'Yeah'.
"But then, as the months have gone on, she's become not too fussed. And I'm not either. So we'll see what happens and how I'm feeling at the time."
With Maric yet to commit, it remains unclear who will win the bet when the clippers come out.
A Facebook appreciation page for Walker's mullet has over 17,000 fans, while Maric's mullet has over 11,000 supporters.
