Sydney Swans mascot captured in startling 'pitch invasion' before final siren of AFL victory

The Swans mascot got a little carried away.

The Sydney Swans produced an incredible 65-point turnaround to get the better of Geelong on Sunday. And the SCG crowd was in pandemonium after Tom Papley kicked the final goal of the contest to extend the lead to 30 points with a minute remaining. But one fan got a little bit too carried away.

Keen to get the celebrations underway, 'Cyggy' trotted out from behind the goals onto the ground, pumping his fists. After continuing on past the goal square, security chased after the AFL mascot and quickly told him to leave the field.

The mascot trotted his way back off the ground but not before he put his hands to his ears to take in the cheers of the adoring crowd. The moment quickly went viral after being shared to Reddit as many said the Swans mascot was every Sydney fan on Sunday afternoon after the dramatic victory.

Fresh off a bye, the Swans were slow out of the blocks and headed into the first break down 5.2 (32) to 0.3 (3). Having won seven in a row heading into the clash, the Swans' winning streak looked like it was coming to an end against the third-placed Cats who were hungry to return to the win column after their shock defeat to the Tigers the week prior.

But the Swans started chipping away at the deficit and headed into halftime just five points behind before running away with the match. The victory before a 44,714-strong crowd at the SCG was in coach John Longmire's 200th and the veteran coach said it showed the depth of talent at Sydney.

"You can't flirt when you're playing well," Longmire said after their eighth-straight victory. "We've still got a bit of work to do on our starts. We certainly got exposed.

"We saw what happened in the first quarter against a good team when you just take the pressure off a little bit. We don't want to be just one that relies upon talent. When we're working hard and we're putting pressure on, our talent then is able to come through. It doesn't work the other way around."

Despite suffering a tough loss at the hands of the Swans, Geelong coach Chris Scott is adamant the Cats can return to the form that saw them start the season strong. After fumbling a 35-point-lead on Sunday the Cats have now lost five of their last six games and will enter next week's bye round with an 8-5 record

But Scott is confident there is no need to panic. "We're clearly disappointed with the result but going into our bye with 10 games to go, we feel pretty positive and optimistic about where we are in the season and the capacity for improvement that we have," Scott said. "It wasn't as if we didn't have our chances late in the game. Some of the parts where we let ourselves down are overnight fixes."
