Super Bowl 2025: Bettors fairly split on Eagles and Chiefs, point spread hasn't moved
NEW ORLEANS — The most notable part of the Super Bowl LIX point spread is that nothing has happened with it.
The spread opened at BetMGM with the Kansas City Chiefs as a 1.5-point favorite over the Philadelphia Eagles. A week and a half later, the spread remains at Chiefs -1.5.
There's usually a little bit of movement on the most-bet game of the year, but bettors are nearly split on the two sides. Of all the bets on the spread, 54% are on the Chiefs and 46% are on the Eagles. The lack of a clear majority on either side is a reason the line hasn't moved at all yet.
The two six-figure wagers that BetMGM has taken on the moneyline are split too. There was an $800,000 bet on the Eagles at +110 odds, and a $300,000 bet on the Chiefs at -130 odds.
Most of the money bet on the Super Bowl usually comes in over the two or three days before kickoff, so there's still time for the point spread to move based on those bets. But so far, oddsmakers have no reason to shift what seems like the right line on the game.
Some notable Super Bowl bets
There is one way to look at the split among bettors, and it's probably a similar split to fans' rooting interests. BetMGM is available in 22 states, and in 21 of those states the majority of Super Bowl bets are on the Eagles. BetMGM is also legal in Washington, D.C., and the majority of bettors are on the Eagles there as well. The one state backing the Chiefs is Missouri, of course.
There have been some other notable bets on the Super Bowl. That includes three interesting Super Bowl MVP bets: $25,000 on Travis Kelce at 15-to-1 odds, $1,500 on Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert at 100-to-1 and a deep cut of Eagles offensive guard Landon Dickerson with a $10 bet on him at 1000-to-1 odds. An offensive lineman has never won Super Bowl MVP and hasn't even gotten serious consideration for it.
There was also a $2,000 bet the Chiefs winning by the exact score of 27-23, at 175-to-1 odds.
For those who are deep into weird Super Bowl prop bets you can wager on whether Kelce proposes to girlfriend and international superstar Taylor Swift. The odds on yes are +800, and 95% of the bets are on Kelce popping the question.
The total has moved a little
While there hasn't been any movement on the Super Bowl point spread, there has been some slight movement on the total.
The total opened at 48.5, went up to 49 shortly after, but moved back down to 48.5. That's notable because most bets are on the over, but the line moved back the other way. Of all the action on the total at BetMGM, 68% of bets and 60% of money is on the over.
A majority of bettors are hoping for a high-scoring Super Bowl LIX. There's not as much certainty about who will win the game.
