Take an inside look at the world of Sumo School
It turns out being a Sumo wrestler is much more than meets the eye. Being a huge man and wrestling is only one part of the endeavour into Sumo as evidenced by the world of Sumo School.
All potential Sumo wrestlers, known as apprentices must attend the school made up of a six-month curriculum and undertake a wide variety of learning.
Obviously the wrestling is important, but it is only half of it. The wrestling portion as you would expect sees the apprentices learn basic moves as well as sumo customs and manners.
The second part is the Sumo classroom, which is made up of six sections, including Japanese calligraphy, traditional singing, sports medicine, biology, social studies and the history of sumo.
Each class is taught by experts and university professors and whilst there are no exams, attendance is the key focus.
