Steve Smith sends cricket world wild over 'outrageous' act

Steve Smith has produced one of his trademark diving catches for Sussex in the County Championship to send the cricket world berserk. Smith has been playing in England to help him prepare for the Test Championship final and the Ashes starting in June.

Smith hasn't been in his best form since arriving in the UK with scores of 30 and three to start the season. However, it clearly hasn't impacted his fielding with Smith taking an absolute screamer at second slip.

Leicestershire were leading by 27 runs when Rehan Ahmed came to the crease. Henry Crocombe bowled an enticing delivery outside off stump, which prompted the batter to reach for the ball.

The edge went flying to Smith's right, but the Aussie went airborne. Smith took the catch while he was horizontal to send his teammates into rapture.

"Oh my word, that was Steve Smith," the commentator said of Smith's effort. "Unbelievable, what a catch that was. I thought that was past him."

The World No.3 Test batter may be searching for his best form with the bat in hand, but he has still managed to leave the cricket world speechless after his latest 'superman' effort for Sussex.

Steve Smith struggles ahead of the Ashes

Smith wasn't amongst the runs for Sussex as he was trapped LBW in front from a Wiaan Mulder delivery. Fellow Aussie Peter Handscomb, who was left out of the Australian Ashes squad, scored 26 and a duck for Leicestershire.

Handscomb's season tally sits at 395 runs with an impressive average of 56.42 across five County Championship matches. The middle-order batter was a surprise exclusion from the Ashes squad, considering his form in India compared to the other batters who struggled for form.

Marcus Harris was selected as a potential opener for Australia in the Ashes squad, but his woeful form has continued. Harris has scored 1, 26, 37, 5 and 7 in his five innings in the Championship.

He did start his campaign in strong form having scored a century for Glamorgan, but hasn't delivered since. In worrying news for England, James Anderson limped off the field for Lancashire having taken 2-16 in a strong spell.

Anderson suffered a minor groin strain and will most likely be rested ahead of the first Test against Australia with England's quick options potentially dwindling. Jofra Archer has been battling injury and is also no certainty to play Australia in the first Test.
