Steve Smith never fails to entertain during the Ashes and the Aussie has produced one of the more bizarre cricket shots from his repertoire to date to leave the commentators in stitches. Smith started the day at the crease, alongside Usman Khawaja, as Australia built on their big first innings lead.

The mercurial batter, who scored a stunning century in the first innings, looked comfortable at the crease as the score ticked over. But the Aussie got himself into a tangle during the first session.

Smith backed away from England villain Ollie Robinson's delivery, but the bowler followed him with a wide bouncer. The Aussie was determine to make contact with the ball and swiped at it like an overhead tennis shot.

Smith made contact, but fell over on his back doing a full 360. The commentators were left in stitches as Smith smiled on the floor. "He is actually practising his shot, while lying on his back," Ponting said.

Khawaja was all smiles at the other end as Smith burst out laughing. Viewers joined in on the laughs and joked Smith was attempting to come up with a new cricket shot.

Steve Smith breaks cricket records in Ashes century

Smith couldn't replicate his first innings total having been dismissed for 34 after a top edge from Josh Tongue's delivery. Smith was part of Australia's mini-collapse with Khawaja, Travis Head and Smith all departing in the space of a few overs. However, he has already smashed records after his first innings greatness.

One day after becoming the second-fastest man to reach 9,000 runs in Test cricket, Smith sealed more history with a 32nd Test century that brings him level with Steve Waugh in the list of Australian centurions, with Ricky Ponting the only Aussie ahead of them on 41 tons. Smith and Waugh are now joint-11th in the all-time list of Test centurions, headed by Sachin Tendulkar.

With 9,079 Test runs in total, Smith's average of 59.73 is superior to Waugh and any of the other batters above him in the hundreds list. His 3,176 Ashes runs also puts him fourth on the all-time runs list, overtaking Waugh's 3,173 for Australia against England. Smith is also just the third man with 12 Ashes centuries to his name and the first since Sir Don Bradman in 1,937 to reach the milestone.
