Latrell Mitchell helps NSW set unwanted Origin record

Latrell Mitchell has written NSW into the State of Origin record books after being sin-binned midway through the second half of the Maroons’ 18-14 win.

The Blues centre was sent for 10 minutes for a professional foul on Queensland’s Matt Gillett on the try line.

Gillett was sandwiched by Mitchell and James Tedesco as he unsuccessfully reached out for the ball.

The Bunker deemed Mitchell dragged Gillett down before the Maroons veteran had possession, but with Tedesco nearby it was not ruled a penalty try.

However, Mitchell’s sin-binning meant the Blues became the first team in Origin history to have a player sent to the bin in three consecutive games.

James Roberts earned 10 minutes in the second game last year, while James Maloney copped it in the third.

Kalyn Ponga converted a penalty goal to level the scores at 8-all.

And Queensland took full advantage of Mitchell’s time off the field as Dane Gagai ran almost the length of the field to score an intercept try.

Gagai scored again just a few minutes later as the Maroons raced out to a lead they would not relinquish.

The Blues’ defeat capped off a desperate month for the 21-year-old.

From best in the world to a walk of shame in front of 50,000 cheering Queenslanders – much has changed since single-handedly destroying the Wests Tigers in a 42-12 rout for the Sydney Roosters.

Fast forward four weeks and Mitchell, so dominant for NSW in 2018, had a Wednesday night to forget.

He barely fired a shot against his sparring partner from last year in Will Chambers.

While the Maroons' centre finished the night with 118 running metres and 18 tackles, Mitchell could only post 10 tackles and 72 metres.

Chambers made sure he reminded Mitchell of his presence during one moment in the first half when he crash-tackled his rival and gave him a verbal spray as he lay on top of the prone NSW man.
