Controversial British media identity Piers Morgan has taken a brutal new swipe at Naomi Osaka after labelling the Japanese tennis star a "fraud" during an unflattering comparison with US Open champion, Emma Raducanu.

Morgan has hit out at Osaka in the past, with the outspoken 56-year-old taking aim at the four-time major winner during the recent US Open.

Osaka was booed by fans at Flushing Meadows after throwing her racquet and hitting a ball into the crowd during an ill-tempered loss to eventual runner-up Leylah Fernandez.

Following the match, Osaka fronted the media and announced she would be taking time away from the sport.

The Japanese star was labelled a "spoiled brat" by Morgan at the time, with his comments drawing criticism from fans on social media.

However, the media identity has taken a fresh swipe at the 23-year-old following her appearance at the Met Gala in New York.

Osaka was among a number of tennis identities at the flashy event, with Fernandez, Raducanu, Serena and Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova some of the others to dazzle at the event.

Morgan took particular exception to the attendance of Osaka, whose struggles with the media and need to take time away from the sport to work on her mental health, have been well documented in 2021.

In a column for the Daily Mail, the British media figure called New York Mayor Bill de Blasio a fraud for his attendance at the 'Oscars of fashion', before savagely turning his attention on Osaka.

"Speaking of frauds, tennis star Naomi Osaka has spent most of the year whining, crying, throwing racket-breaking tantrums on court, and blaming the media for her poor form and mental health issues," he wrote.

"Yet last night she rocked up, as sulky faced as ever, to parade in front of the world's media in an outrageous Louis Vuitton outfit that screamed 'GIVE ME ATTENTION!'"

Morgan was far more glowing in his praise for US Open champion Raducanu, who he also famously chastised for retiring from her fourth round Wimbledon clash on medical grounds.

"Emma Raducanu – who embraces rather than attacks the media - wore a fun, glamorous black-and-white Chanel ensemble that was entirely appropriate for a girl of 18," he wrote following her historic US Open run.

Morgan's comments about Raducanu came after he was savaged on social media for sensationally taking credit for the Brit's stunning US Open triumph.

The British teenager arrived in New York last month with a ranking of 150 in the world, just one grand slam appearance to her name and a flight booked out of town after the US Open's preliminary rounds in case she failed to win her way into the main tournament.

On Saturday she was in Arthur Ashe Stadium, holding a trophy to complete an unlikely and unprecedented journey from qualifier to major champion by beating Canadian teenager Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in the final.

The 18-year-old became the first qualifier in history to win a grand slam, sending the tennis world into meltdown.

Morgan was one of the many to congratulate the young Brit on her historic victory, having previously slammed her for being a "quitter".

He slammed Raducanu when she retired during the fourth round in her grand slam debut at Wimbledon earlier this year, saying the teenager needed to toughen up and couldn't handle the pressure.

Morgan then doubled down last week when he said it was "disappointing" to see fans going nuts over Raducanu now that she was winning instead of "quitting".

"Very disappointing to see wokies going crazy because Emma Raducanu is now winning not quitting," he tweeted.

"This must be so triggering to losers who are used to you celebrating their failures. Please stop."

So many were surprised to see Morgan change his tune after Raducanu won the US Open on Sunday and even taking some of the credit.

"Imagine if Emma Raducanu had taken Twitter’s advice & carried on ‘bravely’ and ‘heroically’ quitting and losing…", Morgan tweeted.

"Thank God she’s made of tougher stuff & realised that winners don’t quit & have to learn how to handle the pressure. That’s why she’s Champion today. Congrats Emma."

He later replied to a fan: "I said she needed to toughen up after she quit. She toughened up. The words you’re seeking are ‘Thanks Piers’.

"I’ve been totally vindicated. She took my advice and won.”
