Spectators erupt at Olympics after unexpected intruder 'with dad bod' takes Games by storm

After American Emma Weber lost her cap during her breastroke heat a hero answered the call.

He is the man the Olympics didn't know they needed but when duty called, a speedo-clad lifeguard saved the day by charging out onto centre stage to deliver a gold medal performance. Midway through the heats of the women's 100m breaststroke on Sunday, swimming at the Paris La Defence Arena was halted temporarily after American Emma Webster's swimming cap was dislodged as she entered the water.

Weber's white cap shot off her head as she dove into the pool but the American star was none the wiser as she had a second swim cap on. The lost headwear had little effect on her performance but as competitors exited the pool the next race was delayed after tournament organisers were alerted to an unknown white object at the bottom of the pool.

As frustrations grew around the pool with several minutes passing without action, a saviour emerged. Those in attendance and those tuning into the global broadcast looked on in shock and awe as a lifeguard stripped down and entered the pool deck, smirking as a wolf-whistler spurred him on.

The Adonis in a pair of colourful speedos covered in tigers dove into the nearly 10-foot pool without hesitation to grab the cap before surfacing to the roars of the crowd. The man dubbed "Bob the Cap Catcher" then pulled himself back onto the pool deck and waved the cap above his head in celebration. “That was an Olympic moment,” a Eurosport commentator said during the broadcast. And social media immediately fell in love with their dad bod hero, applauding his actions online.

The moment came a day after an incident that didn't go down so well which led to Eurosport commentator, Bob Ballard being sensationally dumped from the network's coverage of the Paris Games over a remark he made following the Australian women's 4x100m relay triumph. The quartet of Emma McKeon, Mollie O'Callaghan, Shayna Jack and Meg Harris stormed to gold on Saturday night in the Paris pool, bringing up Australia's fourth-straight triumph in the event at the Olympics.

But the moment was overshadowed for some viewers after Ballard made an extraordinary comment called out as being 'outrageous' and 'sexist'. After claiming victory as the Aussies posed for photos on the pool deck, Ballard grew fed up and made a snide comment about how long they were taking.

“Well the women just finishing up,” Ballard said on Eurosport's coverage. “You know what women are like … hanging around, doing their make-up.”

Ballard immediately tried to laugh off the remark, but co-commentator Lizzie Simmonds described it as an “outrageous” thing to say. Following the remark, the veteran commentator copped widespread backlash on social media, and Eurosport decided to remove him from their coverage.

“During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment,” a statement from the network said. “To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”
