At the University of South Carolina’s annual Garnet and Black Spring Game on Saturday, kicker Parker White got the surprise of his life.

White, a former walk-on who didn’t even play in his first year on campus, was told to look at the stadium’s video board after he nailed a field goal just before halftime. As his teammates stood around him, White watched several of his own highlights before the surprise was revealed: He’d been put on scholarship.

White was then mobbed by his ecstatic teammates, of course.

The redshirt junior joined the team in January 2017, and a moment from his first start later that year was included in the video. After missing two field goals against Louisiana Tech, he kicked the game-winner — his first-ever collegiate field goal — with four seconds left. South Carolina won 17-16, and White has been the starting kicker ever since.

Overall, White is 27-for-41 on field goals, and 21-for-23 from 40 yards or closer. He’s also missed just one out of 72 PATs. He’s kicked two other game-winning fourth-quarter field goals, both in 2018. In fact, White received his scholarship surprise six months to the day after he kicked the game-winning field goal against Missouri in October.
