Soccer teams condemn 'White Lives Matter' flyover

English Premier League soccer teams Manchester City and Burnley have condemned the actions of a small plane towing a banner that read "White Lives Matter Burnley," after it appeared over the stadium during their match on Monday (June 22)

The plane appeared shortly after players from both teams took a knee on the pitch -- the symbolic gesture of support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

So far there has been no indication who had organized the plane and banner.

Burnley made it clear in a statement issued at half-time in the game that the message does not represent their club saying, quote:

“They will work with authorities to identify those behind the move and issue lifetime bans."

Since the Premier League restarted after its enforced mid-season break, all players have taken a knee immediately as the games have begun.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola:

“It took 400 years. It comes from a long, long time ago, it's not going to change in one week. You need time. Racism is still there, it's still here and you have to fight every day, with our behaviours and condemn the bad things.”

European soccer has had its problems with racist behavior from supporters even before this incident.

Notably in October, when an international match between England and Bulgaria in Sofia had to be halted because people in the stands were making monkey chats toward England's black players.

The offenders were told to leave the stadium.
