Smoke Pillars Rise from Mauna Loa Lava Flows

Smoke and lava could be seen flowing from several places on the surface of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii early on Tuesday, November 29.

Flight footage recorded on Tuesday morning by @bre.slu shows at least two separate columns of smoke rising from flowing lava on Mauna Loa.

The USGS said on Tuesday afternoon that several lava flows were travelling in a northeastern direction from the summit of the volcano. One flow had crossed a road but no properties were in danger from the eruption, the update added.

Lava fountains from the eruption were 16-33 feet tall on Tuesday afternoon, the USGS said. Credit: @bre.slu via Storyful
