Shayna Jack reveals devastating 'truth' of doping scandal

Shayna Jack has revealed the substance that caused her to return a positive out-of-competition drug test weeks away from the FINA World Championships.

The event, which had already been defined by controversial anti-doping protests by Australia’s Mack Horton and Britain’s Duncan Scott, was again in the the spotlight after it was revealed that Jack had failed a test.

Australian swimming was thrown into chaos once the revelation was made public, with Horton’s protest held in a new light once the story broke.

On Sunday, Jack posted a lengthy statement accessible through her Instagram page, in which she revealed it was the substance ‘Ligandrol’ which caused her to return a positive sample.

The 20-year-old insisted she ‘did not cheat’ and vowed to clear her name.

“I could still hear the woman in the background on the phone, talking more about what will go on and that I have to leave the camp and return home, as I was placed on immediate provisional suspension until the 'B sample' is tested,” Jack wrote in her statement.

“She also went on to explain what was found in my system, I had never heard of it before, let alone know how to pronounce it; she said it was "Ligandrol”.

“I now know that this can be found in contaminated supplements.

“I didn't intentionally take this substance; I didn't even know it was in my system.

“It just didn't make any sense, and still doesn't to this day.

“In Australia, in a sport like swimming, I feel there is no possible way for an athlete to intentionally take a banned substance and not get caught.

“I get tested approximately every four to six weeks, so why would I take anything banned and do this to myself? Especially leading up to competition where I could be tested daily.

“Why would I put myself through this anguish and risk jeopardising my career and my character?

“I did not and would not cheat and will continue to fight to clear my name.”

Mack Horton stays silent on doping scandal

Australian swimming star Mack Horton has dodged questions about the doping scandal surrounding teammate Shayna Jack.

Horton won widespread praise for his protest against rival swimmer Sun Yang, after refusing to share the podium with the Chinese star, who could be subject to a life ban from the sport after interfering with a doping test.

News of the doping scandal within the Australian team compromised Horton’s stance.

ABC correspondent Jake Sturmer approached Horton at the FINA World Championships in South Korea on Sunday, asking for the gold medallist’s thought’s on the Jack story.

Horton was tight-lipped, offering a slight grin before hastily making his way onto a team bus.

The ABC reported Horton’s teammate, Mitch Larkin, said the team was “trying to focus on tonight's efforts.”
