‘GO DRINK SOME BEER’: Fabio Fognini spits towards linesman and mocks fan
But the match didn’t come without its drama after the US Open finalist lost his cool in the first set when he was down 4-2.
After hitting a volley at the net straight at his opponent and subsequently losing the point, Medvedev took his frustration out on his racquet leaving it in a mangled mess.
“I usually don’t like to do it, to break the racquets, because it’s never beautiful,” Medvedev said after the match.
“But it’s true that sometimes it maybe can help to get some emotions out and get also the stress out.”
Third seed Medvedev will play Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals after the Italian 10th seed, who knocked out Andy Murray in the second round, defeated seventh seed Karen Khachanov from Russia 6-3 7-5.
Fognini spits, spat with fan
Italian tennis maverick Fognini has continued his antics at the Shanghai Masters after appearing to spit in the direction of a linesman and mocking a fan.
Earlier in the week, a fuming Andy Murray accused Fabio Fognini of shouting during a critical point as the Briton went down fighting in three bitter sets at the Shanghai Masters.
But the fiery Italian continued his bad-boy antics during his victory over Karen Kachanov when he spat in the direction of a linesman - after a foot fault - and mocked a fan.
