Ed Sheeran has opened up about the death of good friend Shane Warne, revealing he found out about the tragedy from the paparazzi.

Warne's death left fans in shock all around the world after he suffered a suspected heart attack while on holidays in Thailand.

British musician Sheeran, who had formed an unlikely bond with Warne in recent years, was among the hundreds of thousands of fans rocked by the news.

However Sheeran has now revealed how he was informed of the tragedy by a member of the paparazzi in London.

Sheeran told the Hit Network's Carrie and Tommy radio show that he was leaving court when a photographer told him Warne had died.

"I came out of court on the first day to a paparazzi saying, 'Hey, what do you think of your friend Shane dying?'" Sheeran said.

"It's just a very, very weird time. I haven't been able to process or grieve anything.

"It's really, really sad. I love Shane and I have an amazing last memory of me and him (at a Coldplay concert together)."

Sheeran had earlier posted a tribute to Warne on social media, revealing they'd only recently spoken about the death of Aussie music legend Michael Gudinski.

“The world keeps taking incredible people away," he wrote.

“I spoke to Shane on the anniversary of Michael’s passing this week saying we were both raising a glass of 707 in his honour, and now this news comes out.

“Shane was the kindest heart, and always went above and beyond to make people feel welcome and special. Such a gentleman.

“He gave so many hours and years of his life to bring joy to others, and was such an amazing friend to me.

"I'll bloody miss you mate. Absolutely gutted.”

Sheeran first met Warne at a Kylie Minogue gig in 2014.

"I have three phones and he texts all three of them," Sheeran previously revealed.

"We were out, we went to the Kylie gig and then ended up out with Shane Warne."

Warne will be publicly farewelled at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 30.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the MCG as the venue for a state memorial service to honour the Australian cricket legend.

"There's nowhere in the world more appropriate to farewell Warnie than the 'G," he tweeted last week.

The MCG was the stage of the leg-spinner's famous Ashes hat-trick in 1994 and his 700th Test wicket on Boxing Day in 2006 - his final series before he retired from international cricket.

Ticket information for the evening event is yet to be released, but the premier said there will no crowd cap at the venue, which can hold up to 100,000 spectators.

"It'll be a very big event. It will be a celebration of his life as it should be," Mr Andrews told reporters.

Autopsy results show Warne died from a suspected heart attack, confirming the death was due to natural causes with no signs of foul play.
