Serena sends fans into frenzy with yet another new outfit

Move over catsuit and black tutu.

Serena Williams has yet another new outfit at the US Open.

Two days after sending fans into a frenzy by rocking a black tutu dress for her first round clash in New York, Serena went one step further on Thursday (AEST).

Walking out on court for her second round match, the tennis superstar looked even more like a ballerina with a powder blue version of the tutu.

Needless to say, fans went wild.

The hullabaloo surrounding Serena’s outfits kicked off last week when the catsuit she wore for the French Open was banned for future years.

The 23-time grand slam singles champion caused a stir by wearing the striking black outfit in Paris earlier this year but French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli told Tennis magazine this week it would not be deemed acceptable at future tournaments.

“It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place,” he said.

The stance was heavily criticised, particularly given Williams wore the catsuit partly to help prevent potentially fatal blood clots to which she is prone after pregnancy.

The tennis world then went into meltdown when Serena debuted her black tutu on Tuesday, with many seeing it as a defiant response to the catsuit ban.

However Serena had already announced plans to wear the tutu in Flushing Meadows before the controversial ban on her French Open outfit.

Serena and Venus set to meet in 20-year first

Serena set up another meeting with sister Venus after a straight-sets win over Carina Witthoft.

Serena, who missed the grand slam last year due to the birth of her daughter, was too good for Witthoft 6-2 6-2 in the second round on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

That saw the 23-time grand slam champion move into a third-round clash with Venus, with the sisters to meet for a 30th time in their illustrious careers.

It will be the earliest they’ve ever clashed at a grand slam since the Australian Open in 1998.

Serena holds a 17-12 win-loss record against Venus, including winning their past five meetings at majors.

Witthoft pushed Serena on serve during the first set of their encounter, including breaking in the fifth game.

But Serena broke at will, Witthoft struggling to hold serve as the 36-year-old American grabbed the opening set.

With her first-serve percentage rising, Serena took control in the second set with a break for a 4-2 lead.

A forehand return winner set up match point for Serena in the eighth game and her victory was sealed when Witthoft sent a forehand into the net.
