If you see a strange figure at Gamble Sands, relax, it's just the new Scarecrow logo
Gamble Sands has unveiled the logo for its new and second full-sized golf course named Scarecrow. If it looks like the figure might amble out of a nearby field above the Columbia River near twilight, then mission accomplished.
Scarecrow was designed by David McLay Kidd, with his associate Nick Schaan serving as lead architect for the first time. The course was laid across tumbling ground near the town of Brewster that once was a cornfield and that features multiple valley drop-offs and long views over nearby farms and the river below. The course is slated to open August 1.
The logo was designed by the Gebbers family, the farming family that owns Gamble Sands. The original namesake course at Gamble Sands features a rabbit-styled logo, also designed by the Gebbers.
“This is our Scarecrow – a friendly-yet-mysterious presence welcoming golfers to this bold new DMK design,” Gamble Sands general manager Blake Froling said in a media release announcing the new logo. “The Gebbers family wanted our Scarecrow to look and feel almost human, like he might appear in the fairway at any moment for a few swings before retreating back into the apple trees that still line the golf course, resuming his duties as defender of the fields.”
The new course will stretch Gamble Sands to 50 holes. The original namesake course, designed by Kidd, is ranked by Golfweek’s Best as the No. 2 public-access layout in Washington and is tied for No. 49 among all modern courses in the United States. The resort’s 14-hole short course, Quicksands – also designed by Kidd – is ranked No. 5 among all public-access short, par-3 and non-traditional courses in the U.S.
In addition to the new course, the popular resort is expanding this summer with 40 new double-king luxury rooms, giving the property 77 rooms in all. The new rooms overlook the Scarecrow course.
