Sam Kerr accidentally overshadows Matildas teammate as football world celebrates baby news
The injured Matildas captain has revealed her partner Kristie Mewis is expecting.
Sam Kerr has inadvertently taken some of the spotlight away from Matildas teammate Chloe Logarzo after revealing on Monday night she's set to become a mother with partner Kristie Mewis. The injured Matildas captain took to Instagram to share the wonderful news, posting a series of happy snaps with her pregnant partner Mewis.
The pair can be seen kissing in one photo, with another showing them holding an ultrasound picture. Kerr is also seen smiling in another photo that shows off Mewis' pregnant belly.
She posted: "Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!" The beautiful news sparked an outpouring of messages from around the football world, with Matildas teammates Mary Fowler, Caitlin Foord and Mackenzie Arnold among the many to share their congratulations.
But in the process of revealing the baby news, Kerr accidentally overshadowed another announcement from a Matildas player. Logarzo had taken to Instagram just hours prior to reveal she'd married her partner McKenzie Berryhill over the weekend, describing it as "simply the best week of our lives".
Logarzo and Berryhill tied the knot in Thailand, and shared a series of photos on social media on Monday afternoon. It led to an awkward scenario in which the Matildas' official account congratulated Logarzo and Berryhill after Kerr's baby announcement was already made public. There's no suggesting Kerr and Mewis overshadowed Logarzo on purpose, but the latter probably would have liked a little bit more time in the spotlight.
Sam Kerr's future still uncertain due to knee injury
Kerr and Mewis have been together since 2020, but only went public with their relationship the following year. Mewis is a United States international and plays for West Ham United in the Women's Super League.
Kerr plays for Chelsea, but has been sidelined since January after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament, which meant she missed the Paris Olympics. No timeline has been set for her return, and the 31-year-old recently revealed she's taking her rehab slowly.
"I mean, it's my second ACL, so I know you need to take the time, you need to make sure it's right and I'm doing everything I can," she told Optus Sport in September. "But there's definitely no rush for me, I want to make sure I can play for many more years to come."
Last week, interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said Kerr is “coming on well”. He said: "Things are getting a little bit better in rehab, but in reality it's still probably a 12-month injury."

Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis open up about relationship
Kerr has previously opened up about the dilemma she feels when playing against Mewis. They've gone head-to-head a number of times over the years in games between the Matildas and USA.
“I think there’s this part of us where we’re both separate athletes and when we compete against each other there’s this worry that people don’t think we don’t take it seriously because you’re playing your girlfriend,” she admitted. “That’s what I worry about most out of anything, is that our coaches or teammates don’t think that we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it’s training time or play time, it doesn’t come into it.”
Mewis said she's "proud" to be able to express her love for Kerr on a global scale. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.
