Cipriani posted a heartfelt tribute to his unborn son, River, confirming that his fiancee suffered a miscarriage while the baby was just 24 weeks old.

He wrote: “It’s been a challenging year, for many different reasons. I’ve had to emotionally overcome and heal in different ways that I haven’t experienced before. In doing so it brought up old trauma and wounds that were unresolved.

“Then the most beautiful thing happened, I was going to be a father and I fell in love. Deeply in love.

“For me falling in love was the scariest thing to do hence my behaviour over the years, she is the most magnificent, kind, wise, and beautiful person I’ve ever met.”

He added: “At 24 weeks we lost River, our son.”

Cipriani insisted that while it was a cruel loss for the couple, their love has grown stronger as a result of the horrible tragedy.

“This may seem a sad post, it isn’t,” he said.

“This break now from last season and reflecting is a special place to be. I’m more determined than ever to keep growing, learning and loving with my woman.”

Cipriani sparked rumours that he and Ms Rose were engaged after a teasing social media post in September.

Alongside a picture of Victoria, he wrote: “Introducing @victoriarosecipriani – pinch myself every day!”

The 32-year-old and his fiancee had not previously shared news that Ms Rose was pregnant.

Cipriani confirmed engagement this year

In August, the English rugby star confirmed he was engaged with a touching picture and Instagram post about his fiancee.

He wrote: " You make me the happiest man in the world. I love waking up with you every morning, not knowing which one of our personalities is going to arise, and how we fall in love with each other over and over again.

"You make every day so much better, I can’t wait to get home from training every day to see you. I can’t imagine life without you. You make me want to be the best man i possibly can for you and our family.

"You are my now wife to be. I can’t wait to marry you in October. You’re my lover my best friend, you are so loyal, incredibly intelligent, sexy with so much class. I learn from you all the time.

"I will never get complacent, you deserve the greatest love every day. We could be doing absolutely nothing for days on end as long as I’m with you. My dream of finding the one i never thought would come true. And it has. I vow to you I’m going to turn up every day. Love and support you for the rest of our lives. Love you @rosierosee__"
