It’s rare to see a rookie NFL player who knows exactly what he wants to do when football is done. It’s probably unheard of for a rookie to go work at a Bojangles restaurant over some of his bye week as part of that goal.

Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines has a fun, unique tale.

In a really interesting story by Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, Hines explained why he spent part of the Colts bye week working the counter at Bojangles in Raleigh, N.C., where he attended N.C. State.

He’s not hoping to work the drive-thru window when he’s done. But he’d like to own a few of the fast-food chicken restaurants.

Nyheim Hines really really likes Bojangles

Hines said he wants to own “at least five” Bojangles franchises when he’s done playing. Since he’s just 22 years old and playing a key role as a change-of-pace back for the Colts, that seems far off for the 2018 fourth-round pick. But it’s the NFL, and nothing lasts too long.

So he wants to own some Bojangles restaurants and for a good reason.

“Best fries in the fast food industry,” Hines told Keefer. “The chicken’s really good, and they have these things called boberry biscuits. Nothing like them.”

Hines tagged Bojangles in an Instagram post over the summer, Keefer wrote, and the chain got in touch with him. He asked about working the counter during the Colts’ bye. So he did.

“If I’m gonna run one one day, I wanna do it all,” Hines explained to the Star.

It’s a great story, and one every NFL player should pay attention to. It’s never too early to think about post-football plans, even if it means putting in some time behind the counter at a fast-food restaurant.

Hines thinking about the future

Hines has a four-year, $3.18 million rookie deal. Maybe he’ll get the big second contract all players covet, but if not he has a plan on how to invest that money.

It seems like he has spent time thinking his plan through.

“I’ve never seen a Chick-fil-A, a McDonald’s or a Bojangles closed down,” Hines told Keefer.
