Robots and humans 'working in harmony': What it's like inside a massive Amazon fulfillment center

Stepping into an Amazon (AMZN) fulfillment center is like entering a giant, futuristic ants’ nest.

Without missing a beat, employees stored products in banana-colored totes that are transported to co-workers who pack them, place them on a conveyor belt and ship them off to anxiously awaiting buyers — all with the help of new, robotic technology.

Yahoo Finance visited one of Amazon’s 175 fulfillment centers worldwide in Robbinsville, New Jersey, on the busiest digital shopping day of the year: Cyber Monday.

The one-million square foot facility is equal in size to about 28 football fields and is home to tens of millions of products and thousands of robotics. The warehouse, among 109 others in the United States, is open 22 hours every day to cater their customers with the best retail service around.

“There’s more than 3,000 full-time associates working in harmony with our Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship items directly to customers,” Amazon Senior Public Relations Manager Lori Torgerson told us.

Amazon is now the highest paying major retailer in the country. The company raised its minimum wage to $15 an hour, affecting about a quarter-million workers. Today, Amazon has over 600,000 employees, but to prepare for the holiday season, the e-commerce marketplace hired 100,000 seasonal associates.

“We’ve also increased our delivery capacity with our own fleet of trucks and planes to be able to deliver customers their packages, on time, all throughout the year and particularly during the busy holiday shopping season,” Torgerson said.

Amazon continues to flourish from its dominance in the retail market, especially during the holidays. Following 2017, where the company sold 961 items every second on Cyber Monday, Amazon increased its output once again with another record-breaking sales day. The company stated that ” Amazon customers worldwide ordered more than 18 million toys and more than 13 million fashion items on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, combined.
