Robert De Niro has denied the reports that he is reprising his iconic Taxi Driver role for an Uber advert.

Last week, it was reported that De Niro would be reprising his role as Travis Bickle from the famous 1976 film in an upcoming Uber advert, prompting criticism from Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader on social media.

Now, in a statement, De Niro's representatives have denied the reports that he will be playing Travis Bickle in the advert, nor will the character's famous phrase "You talkin' to me?" be used.

"De Niro's Uber commercial has nothing to do with his Taxi Driver character," the actor's representative Stan Rosenfield said (via Variety).

Uber have also confirmed that De Niro is filming a campaign for the company but it won't reference his Taxi Driver character. "We are filming with Robert De Niro in London for a new Uber UK campaign, which will launch later in the year," the company said in a statement.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, Taxi Driver earned De Niro critical acclaim for his portrayal of Bickle, with the actor receiving a Oscar nomination for his work in the role.

The actor will next be seen in Scorsese's upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, set to be released in cinemas next month.

Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival to favourable reviews, the movie sees De Niro and DiCaprio play two relatives determined to get their hands on a colossal oil fortune in Oklahoma during the 1920s.

De Niro has also welcomed his seventh child earlier this year with girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

He later shared further details about the baby's birth with CBS Morning's Gayle King, revealing that his child was a daughter, named Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro.

Killers of the Flower Moon is set for a release on Apple TV+ later this year, with a cinematic rollout scheduled for October.
