Irish brothers give the most hilarious interview of Rio

Rowers Paul and Gary O’Donovan gave Ireland its first medal of the Rio Olympics when the brothers took home silver in Friday’s lightweight men’s double sculls event.

The O’Donovans were in fifth at the race’s halfway mark but surged to finish in 6:30:23, just behind French duo Jeremie Azou and Pierre Houin. The medal was the first ever in rowing for Ireland, as well.

But beyond their prowess in the water, the O’Donovan brothers, who have apparently caused quite a stir in Ireland, are quite funny and give hilarious interviews.

After gracing the podium, the brothers spoke to RTÉ – Ireland’s national television and radio broadcaster – back home about their experience. They did not disappoint.

Gary first sarcastically let viewers know that they are indeed in Rio and that the background “might look superimposed” (it totally is) before Paul described wearing “podium pants” (they were “quite nice”) and the rigours of an Olympic urine test.

“I had to go and do this doping control thing so I was there for an hour or two trying to take a pee into a cup for them,” said Paul, who noted it took “about 10 liters of water.”

After clinching a spot in the finals Thursday, RTÉ asked the O’Donovans about their preparation for Friday’s big race. Their secret? Ice baths and steak. Lots of steak.

“The food is fantastic. Steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you like that,” Gary quipped.

The steak diet certainly paid off with a spot on the podium, but Paul was a bit disappointed they didn’t win the gold medal. Why?

“(Irish boxer) Mick Conlan said he’d box the head off us if we didn’t get the gold!”

Hysterical.
