Aussie men's sevens read 'riot act' after boozy night out in Rio

Australia's men's rugby sevens side has been read the 'riot act' by Aussie Olympics boss Kitty Chiller after a boozy night out in party central Copacabana.

Some of the squad, including team captain Ed Jenkins, struggled home at 9am on Saturday morning after a drunken night out, sources say.

There are reports Jenkins lost his accreditation as the players made their way back to the athletes village.

On Sunday, Chiller confirmed the sevens team had been verbally reprimanded over the drunken outing.

"Yes, I read them the riot act," Chiller told Fairfax Media.

Chiller reportedly spoke with team manager, rather than the players themselves, and no disciplinary action will be taken against the players.

The Australian men's rugby sevens side was knocked out of Rio in the quarter finals, with Fiji going on to take the gold medal.

Australia's women's rugby sevens team won gold in the first week of the competition.

Chiller has stepped up security for athletes heading into the final week of the competition, which includes banning athletes from heading to the iconic Ipanema and Copacabana beaches after 6pm.
