Phenomenal Phelps storms home to win 22nd gold

Michael Phelps has destroyed his opponents to claim his 22nd Olympics gold medal, and his fourth of this Games.

It is the fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal at the event. He is the first swimmer to ever achieve that feat.

In fact the feat has only ever been done by two athletes in any sport; Al Oerter (discus 1956-68) and Carl Lewis (long jump 1984-96).

At 31 it is amazing he can still complete such feats in the pool but the fashion in which he won this event was incredible.

At the halfway mark just 0/01s separated first and third.

But when Phelps turned for home in the freestyle he stretched his lead from under half a body length to almost two.

It is arguably his best swim of the meet and he still has the 4x100m relay left.
