Report: Former Boise State RB shot and killed after allegedly stabbing sheriff's deputy
Former Boise State running back Jack Fields Jr. was shot and killed after allegedly stabbing a sheriff’s deputy while resisting arrest on Thursday, according to a report from The Augusta Chronicle.
Per a statement released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Richmond County deputy Stephan Psillos responded to a “trouble with subject call” at the Residence Inn in Augusta. Encountering Fields in the lobby, Psillos reportedly attempted to arrest the 25-year-old.
Fields reportedly responded by resisting arrest, pulling out a knife and stabbing Psillos multiple times, leading to Psillos killing Fields with his service weapon.
Psillos was transported to Augusta University Medical Center and is still being treated for his wounds, while Fields was pronounced dead at the scene despite additional members of the sheriff’s office performing first aid on him.
From the Chronicle:
Sheriff Richard Roundtree said Psillos is expected to make a full recovery and be released from the hospital Friday or Saturday. He underwent surgery Thursday night for a stab wound to his left shoulder and a laceration to the top of the scalp.
Based on everything Roundtree has seen, he doesn’t believe Psillos violated any policy when shooting the suspect, but said it is not his role to make that determination since the GBI was asked to investigate.
“From everything that I have seen, it was totally justifiable,” Roundtree said. “Again, I don’t need to make that kind of determination. My only concern if my deputy is going to be okay, going to recover.”
A 3-star running back form Texas in the Class of 2012, Fields played for four years at Boise State, where he accrued 336 career rushing yards and one touchdown in 34 career games.
According to The Idaho Statesman, Fields had previously got into trouble in his final year with the Broncos when a fight with teammate Rick Smith led to a reported brain hemorrhage, a fractured skull and a swollen brain for Smith.
Fields’ former roommate Elliot Hoyte confirmed the news on Twitter and alluded to mental health issues for Fields.
I’m struggling to wrap my head around this. Jack and I shared a house for 2 years. He was a selfless friend. He was kind. He was smart. R.I.P. brother. Mental health is serious, take care of each other. I hope the officer who was injured heals. It shouldn’t ever come to this. pic.twitter.com/LOF7v9nkpR
