Report: 49ers give Deebo Samuel permission to seek trade

The San Francisco 49ers have granted Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade, the wide receiver told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Samuel had previously asked 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan for a trade during the team's exit meetings following the season, Schefter reported.

“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle [Shanahan] because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel told ESPN. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport previously reported Sunday morning that San Francisco was expected to "explore trading" Samuel this offseason.

Samuel had expressed frustration about his role in San Francisco's offense this past season. He finished with 670 yards and three touchdowns on 51 catches in 15 games. He rushed for 136 yards and another touchdown.

After being limited to two catches and 22 yards in a 38-13 victory over the Chicago Bears on Dec. 13, Samuel wrote on social media that he was "not struggling at all just not getting the ball." He deleted the post but later admitted to reporters he was a "little frustrated."

His 806 total yards from scrimmage last season were the second-lowest of his career. His 417 yards in 2020 came in just seven games.
