Rebel Moon's Charlie Hunnam was approached about a different role
Rebel Moon star Charlie Hunnam has revealed that he was first approached about a different role in the Netflix space opera.
The former Sons of Anarchy star appears in the first chapter of a planned trilogy as Kai, a mercenary starship pilot who joins with dissident warrior Kora (Sofia Boutella) to battle the evil rulers of Motherworld.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the movie, Hunnam explained that he wasn't originally intended to play Kai when he was approached by director Zack Snyder.
"I would not volunteer [which character], only out of respect to the person who ultimately did it," he recalled. "All of the characters were equally great. Sometimes you read a script, and are offered a character, and you love it, but then you have to go through a process of really understanding, and putting yourself inside that character.
"I read this for another character, but Kai just leapt off the page to me, and literally sort of spoke to me in a way that I immediately imagined the version that I ended up acting in the film. So I just thought, 'I know this guy'."
Hunnam ultimately used his meeting with Snyder for another part to prove how much he related to the Kai character.
"It was an opportunity to play an archetype that I had always wanted to play," he said. "Luckily, Zack was up for it. I had the conversations, and said, 'Yeah, I would love to do this,' and surprised him on the call. I said, 'Listen, I know we're here to talk about this, but can you just give me the grounds to pitch you my version?'
"I didn't even know if this other role had been cast. He smiled, and said, 'Alright, you sold me.' And that was it."
The large international cast for Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire includes the legendary Sir Anthony Hopkins as the voice of mechanical knight Jimmy, Marvel star Djimon Hounsou as the military general Titus as well as Infinity Pool's Cleopatra Coleman and Zack Snyder's Justice League's Ray Fisher as sibling warriors Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is in select cinemas from December 15 and is released on Netflix on December 22.
