Rafa Nadal in heartbreaking scenes as drama erupts between top female rivals at Olympics

The Spaniard received a standing ovation as he left the court.

Rafa Nadal may have played his last tennis match on Court Philippe-Chatrier after he lost his Olympics doubles match with Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final. Nadal was hoping to secure a doubles medal for Spain, alongside prodigy Alcaraz, after he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the singles.

Tennis fans knew every match Nadal plays could be his last. The Spaniard opted to play on the clay at the Olympics, despite withdrawing from Wimbledon. And in tough to watch scenes, Nadal and Alcaraz were no match for Americans Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek having lost in straight sets in the quarter-final.

The match wasn't without it's drama as Nadal became frustrated with a line call on break point with both Spaniards arguing with the chair umpire having claimed the Americans had hit it out. Nadal waved his finger when the point was not overturned, which gave Ram and Krajicek the break in the second set.

Unfortunately for Spain, Nadal and Alcaraz couldn't overturn the break and were knocked out. While Alcaraz has a big chance of a medal in the singles, Nadal's Olympics dream is over. The 22-time grand slam champion was a part of the opening ceremony at the Olympics having passed the torch on in iconic scenes.

And Nadal was all smiles after the loss as he embraced Alcaraz in a symbolic passing of the torch moment in both the Olympics and in tennis. Alcaraz has been full of praise throughout the Olympics having fulfilled a dream of playing doubles with his idol growing up.

Ad Alcaraz was able to repay the favour and showed his class after the defeat in allowing his idol to walk off the court alone so he could receive the admiration from the crowd. Nadal has won a record 14 grand slams on the centre court in Paris and is adored at the grand slam. And the Philippe-Chatrier crowd rose to their feet as the Spaniard waved to the crowd for possibly the last time in Paris.

Meanwhile, World No.1 women's star Iga Swiatek was left rattled after Danielle Collins shared some words with her after the American retured from the match. Swiatek was heading for a victory in the third set, before Collins crossed the net to inform her opponent she had retired.

However, fans were left perplexed when the duo didn't move as Collins appeared to explain something to Swiatek. The Roland Garros champion was left stunned as she looked perplexed as Collins walked off. And after the match, Collins explained to reporters she was unhappy with the World No.1's behaviour.

"I told Iga she didn't have to be insincere about, you know, my injury. There's a lot that happens on camera, and there are a lot of people with a ton of charisma and come out and are one way on camera and another way in the locker room," Collins said.

"And I just haven't had the best experience, and I don't really feel like anybody needs to be insincere," Collins added. "They can be the way that they are. I can accept that, and I don't need the fakeness." Swiatek was asked to address the drama, but said she would "rather not get into these because that's her last year on Tour."

Swiatek will now face Zheng Qinwen in the semi-final of the Olympics. Swiatek is the favourite to win the gold medal as she looks to continue her dominance on clay.
