Waller to continue George Main Stakes dominance

Chris Waller has dominated the George Main Stakes in recent years and another victory in the Group 1 event at Royal Randwick on Saturday looks extremely likely.

Waller has won three of the past four editions of the George Main Stakes with Shoot Out (2012), Sacred Falls (2014) and Kermadec (2015) and he has three of the seven horses in the 2016 George Main Stakes nominations.

Winx will be back in action after missing the Chelmsford Stakes due to the wet track and once again she start as an extremely short-priced favourite.

The star mare is currently short in the 2016 George Main Stakes betting market and bookmakers are taking absolutely no chances.

Winx will be the shortest-priced favourite in the modern history of the George Main Stakes and it is a race that has generally been very good to favourite backers.

Star gallopers like Emancipation (1983), Lonhro (2003), Racing To Win (2006), Grand Armee (2004) and More Joyous (2010) have won the race as odds-on favourites, while Inspired (1984), Campaign King (1987), Vo Rogue (1989), Sincero (2011), Shoot Out (2012), Sacred Falls (2014) and Kermadec (2015) were all successful as the punter's elect.

Winx will be having her fourth start over the famous Randwick mile and a victory in the George Main Stakes will complete the rare Epsom Handicap/Doncaster Mile/George Main Stakes treble.

Waller has also included both Spiritjim and Vanbrugh in the George Main Stakes nominations, but surely neither will trouble their star stablemate.

The most interesting horse in the George Main Stakes is Japanese import Tosen Stardom, who will be sent north by new trainer Darren Weir.

Tosen Stardom made his debut for his new trainer with a fourth place finish behind Awesome Rock in the Group 2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 3 and this is very interesting placement from the Weir camp.

This will be the first time that Tosen Stardom has raced in Sydney since he finished fifth behind Criterion in the 2015 edition of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and before that he was second behind Contributer in the Ranvet Stakes.

Godolphin could have two runners in the George Main Stakes in the form of Hauraki and It's Somewhat, but dominant Chelmsford Stakes winner Hartnell was not included in the nominations.

Hartnell hit a new career peak in the Chelmsford Stakes, but trainer John O'Shea has elected to step the imported stayer up to 2000 metres for the Hill Stakes on Saturday.

Hauraki will go into the George Main Stakes off the back off an impressive first-up victory in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes at Royal Randwick on September 3, while It's Somewhat finished fourth in the same race.
