Saturday - March 26th Rosehill Gardens
Western Sydney Legends Day
'''Race 7 The BMW - Group 1

Race Result:'''

1st: Preferment - $5
2nd: Who Shot Thebarman -$10
3rd: Grand Marshal -$41
Winning Time: Last 600m:
Margins: Half neck x 1 1/4 lengths

Winning Trainer: Chris Waller

On the win: “It was an interesting race. It was a long straight, that’s for sure. He set sail for home at the 600m mark, what do you say. It’s Hugh Bowman at his best. I no longer give him instructions, he knows the horses and he’s got a great feel in the race. So he backed the horse and it got interesting the last 100m and obviously Who Shot Thebarman was in there for a fight, he’s a genuine two-miler, so for Preferment to hang on and win it was a good, tough win because he had a pretty good couple of two-milers chasing him.”

On Preferment’s status: “He’s a very good horse. He’s a Victorian Derby winner, I think he’s won four Group 1 races now, three of them at weight for age or set weights and penalties conditions so he’s a very good horse.”

On the Queen Elizabeth Stakes: “Yeah, he does (run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes), for sure. We’ll just back right off and take him to the beach, even do a bit of dressage with him, just to keep him interested, keep him sparked right up. We might have to find another rider though, I don’t think Hughie will get off Winx.”

On the Sydney Cup claims of the placegetters: “They’re spot on, we couldn’t have them any better. It’s been a long preparation with those horses, they’ve raced three times uncompetitively and then today they step up to a Group 1, tough race and they stand up so you would only expect the same in a couple of weeks time.”

Winning Jockey: Hugh Bowman

On the win: “I missed his VRC Derby win through suspension and that was a bit of a gut wrenching day but in racing you have to take the good with the bad and he made up for that three times over now.”

On the run: “We were a bit concerned about the 2400m today although my ride probably didn’t suggest that because I put the pressure on early but he is a horse that hasn’t shown he can quicken and I didn’t want to be left flat footed so i pulled him out a lot earlier than I usually would and he showed a turn of foot and I thought oh no.”
“I was able to rely on him although he was out of carrots late in the piece he stuck his head out for a Chris Waller trifecta.
“He feels like a Rolls Royce he is one of the best movers I have ever sat on and I have sat on some nice ones.

On next start: “He showed a turn of foot today and he hasn’t shown that in the past and with that in his repertoire now he would probably be out-weighted in a Caulfield Cup and his best form to date has been over 2000m and I don’t know what the plans are but I am sure Chris would have to consider the Queen Elizabeth on that run.”

Race 6 Vinery Stud Stakes
Race Result:

1st: Single Gaze - $17
2nd: Risque - $3.50
3rd: Happy Hannah - $9.00
Winning Time: Last 600m:
Margins: 3/4 length x long head
Winning Trainer: Nick Olive

RACE 5

Jockey James McDonald makes it three wins from 5 rides as he patiently steers Old North along the rail to victory in the Tulloch Stakes.

Winning Trainer: John O’Shea

On the win: “He was nearly unlucky again but James pulled a masterful stroke, he had to ride him like that because of the way the track is playing today and the tempo of the race, if it hadn’t come off, well that would have been fine with us but it came off and when he got out he showed a lovely clean pair of heels.”

On a possible start in the Australian Derby: “Obviously we need to get home and see how the horse pulls up and have a chat to the boss and see what he thinks is the right plan, but it’s been on our radar for a while and he’s on an upward spiral so we’ll see what the week brings. Obviously the progeny of Lonhro haven’t traditionally been adept at 2000 metres or beyond but this fellow is different, he’s very similar in terms of pedigree to a horse called Vengeance Of Rain and he was a great 2000 metre to 2400 metre horse. This fellow looks a lot like him on paper.”

On the stable’s winning treble: “Some days come off and some don’t, last week didn’t really work for us but so far we’re chipping away okay today.”

Winning Jockey: James McDonald

On Godolphin’s winning start: “Hopefully they can do it in Dubai tonight because they have some very good runners tonight as well but it is great to get the team off to a winning start.”

On the horse: “He is a beautiful animal, he has a lot of scope for improvement and is going through the grades quickly and i think the plan is head towards the Derby.”

On the Derby: “Whether he runs a true mile and a half is yet to be seen but he is certainly going the right way, he switched off beautifully today.”

'''RACE 4
Group 3 - TAB Star Kingdom Stakes
(3YO+ Qlty - 1200m)'''

Race Result:

1st: Malaguerra - $2.90
2nd: Target In Sight - $9.00
3rd: Coolring - $5.50
Winning Time: Last 600m:
Margins: 1 1/4 lengths x long head

Winning Trainer: Lee and Anthony Freedman

Lee Freedman on the horse sweating up before the race: “I think he needs to go to the couch for a while the way he behaved today but he is one of those rare horses that can behave like that and still produce his best, probably if he got a run earlier in the straight he’d have won by further.”

On the win: “He’s a bulldog, once he gets at them, he gets his his head down and lowers himself - he’s a very nice horse.”

On the horse being held up for a run in the straight: “He tried his best in, then he went out, he didn’t know where he was going. Blake is a great rider, he doesn’t panic and he got the job done.”

On his next run: “I haven’t thought that far ahead. I’ll probably give him a run at the end of The Championships, I might even run him in the TJ (Smith Stakes) yet because he’s a horse in form. The plan is the Stradbroke Handicap but whether we run here, I’ll just see how he feels and how his behaviour is.”

Winning Jockey: Blake Shinn

On sweating up in the yard: “I think he just has a bit of nervous energy, he is not a bad horse so to speak the raceday pressure just gets to him a little bit like we saw today and once it’s over he settles down.”

On the run: “He has a great motor, he settled great in the run once the barriers opened and I was just biding my time and wasn’t sure if the run was going to come, i had a lap full of horse and the leader just rolled off enough and at the 250m he showed a great turn of foot.

“I didn’t have to hit him or use the whip and he is going places this horse and I am grateful to get the call up and ride it.

On winning for Lee Freedman: “Lee (Freedman) was one of a few trainers to text me after winning the Golden Slipper last week and it’s great to come here and ride a winner for him.”

Race 3
Group 3 - The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes
(3YO+ SW+P - 2000m)

Race Result:

1st: It’s Somewhat - $1.70
2nd: Messene - $10
3rd: Sir John Hawkwood - $8.50
Winning Time: Last 600m:
Margins: Neck x 3/4 L

James McDonald rides his 2nd winner of the day. It's Somewhat raced handy throughout and just wore down his opposition to win.

Winning Trainer: John O’Shea

On the win: “That was an acceptable performance, it was his first go at 10 furlongs here. That will just toughen him up, we’ll see what James has to say but the horse from the Hawkes team (Messene) has had a few runs at the trip and is nice and tough and they made it nice and tough, but he is building a nice record now and hopefully he can continue on.”

On a possible run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes: “I want to have a look at the race - they key to going to the Queen Elizabeth is that I intend to lead on him, I think that is where he is best placed. The other thing about him, he’s not overly effective on this sort of ground, if we can get a bit of wet ground in the Queen Elizabeth and roll to the front, I think that would be his chance to be competitive.”

On future plans: “The winner of this race last year was dominant in the Doomben Cup. I think for this horse that’s probably where he’s headed as well.”

Winning Jockey: James McDonald

On the close finish: “I think i have grown a couple of grey hairs myself.”

On the run: “It was a tough effort because Tommy (Berry) and Dwayne (Dunn) had all their own way in front on the Hawkes pair and I settled behind and stalked the speed.

“I got on my bike a little bit early just so i could be in touch and I was lucky I did that at the right time.

“He was a tad dour but he made a 600m run so he stayed on strong it was a very good effort.

RACE 2
Group 3 - The Schweppervescence
(2YO Qlty - 1400m)

Peter Snowden trained Attention with Jockey Blake Shinn wore down the early leader Crafty Cop and held off the late challenge by top weight Prized Icon to claim the Group 3 event.

Race Result:

1st: Attention - $18
2nd: Prized Icon - $3.40
3rd: Crafty Cop - $4.60
Winning Time: 1:23:84 Last 600m: 35:22
Margins: Long Neck X Long Neck

Winning Trainer: Peter and Paul Snowden

Peter Snowden on Attention: “His two runs he’s had before they’ve both been solid. His first run was good and the other day in the Todman (Stakes) he just got too far back in the race.
“Today ridden forward, we put him in the race early and he was tough enough at the end to win well.

“He’s a nice horse going forward.”

On whether he will compete at The Championships: “Absolutely. Whether it be the Sires , which I think is probably the right race for him, or the Champagne we’ll see how he settles down and make our mind up during the week, but I would think the Sires would be the race for him.”
Paul Snowden on Attention’s ability: “He probably hasn’t stamped himself as a horse that’s had a flashing light on or anything but that’s why we went pre-race trying to put him into the race, from bad barriers he’s been getting a long way back and getting pulled out of the race but Blake was aggressive on him, put him up on speed and he’s one of those horses that keeps giving under pressure and you don’t know his level, where he can get to, he keeps finding.”

Winning Jockey: Blake Shinn

On the win: “It is great to kick off BMW day with a winner for the same connections as Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and it’s great to win another stakes race for the Snowden team.
On the run: “We had to work hard early, he settled beautifully and we got a breather mid race and he had to dig deep from the 300m and he showed qualities of a nice horse going forward.
On the horse: “He is a lovely son of Stratum and is a very big nice compact horse, has a great attitude and he has a good head on his shoulders and he is a horse going places and there are some good options going forward.

On his next start: “I think with some nice Group 1 races coming up and the Brisbane winter carnival it will be interesting to see where Peter and Paul (Snowden) place him.
“I think he has very good talent and whether the team want to throw him in the deep end that quick or just work there way up to Brisbane i won’t pre empt but i am sure he will win a really nice race going forward.”

Race 1 E-Group Security Handicap 1400 Metres.

Federal wins the first event on the card with a perfect ride by James McDonald. Following the leader Raligify along the rail, Federal was able to slowly reel in the margin and win within the shadows of the post.
