A sneak peek at the Rabanne x H&M collection

It’s not unusual for a surprise announcement to be made at Paris Fashion Week, but this season's big reveal was one that had been closely guarded indeed. At a party held at the legendary nightclub Silencio, H&M revealed its latest designer collaborator: Rabanne.

Spanish designer Paco Rabanne, who passed away earlier this year, rose to prominence in the 1960s, where his space-age metallic creations came to dominate on dancefloors across the globe.

Following his retirement in 1999, designer Julian Dossena took over design duties at the brand, and he remains creative director today. A decade on, his collections stay true to the founder's retro-futuristic aesthetic, with his chainmail dresses and kaleidoscopic printed pieces often seen on the A-list, from Iris Law to Dua Lipa.

At the launch celebration, key attendees gave us a sneak preview of the collection, and it's safe to say there is plenty of leopard print and heavy metal in store. Elle Fanning attended in a shimmering silver dress constructed from the house’s signature paillettes, while Ashley Graham wore a second-skin leopard midi. Even Cher made a surprise appearance, dressed in a silver military-style jacket layered over a fine chainmail vest.

“As a designer, I’ve always been interested in exploring hedonism and empowerment. I was very enthusiastic to work with H&M on a collection that will introduce Rabanne’s avant-garde energy to a wider audience in a democratic way“ says Dossena.

Today, H&M has released the complete lookbook, giving us plenty of time to prep those wishlists before the collection lands on November 9. As we expected, the line-up is a riot of texture and colour: vivid prints nod to the brand's Sixties beginnings, while retro sportswear separates are destined to be worn for weekend errands. But the real standouts are, perhaps unsurprisingly, delicate chainmail creations – the shimmering skirts and molten-metallic dresses are designed to dazzle come party season, and bound to be gone in seconds.

Rabanne x H&M will also be the retailer's first designer collaboration to include a homeware line, with sculptural vases and small accessories lined up for the November launch in selected markets.
