Pirates activate Starling Marte following suspension, option Phil Gosselin

Starling Marte is back in black and gold.

The Pirates outfielder was reinstated from the restricted list Tuesday ahead of the team's matchup against the visiting Brewers.

Marte, who was handed an 80-game suspension for PED use in April, is in Tuesday's lineup as the leadoff hitter and will play left field in his first game back. Pittsburgh has everything to gain from his anticipated return, as the Pirates are seven games back of the first-place Brewers in the National League Central race.

The Gold Glove winner in each of the past two seasons, Marte was hitting .241 with two home runs and two stolen bases in 13 games before being banned.

The make room for Marte on the roster, the Pirates optioned infielder Phil Gosselin to Triple-A Indianapolis.
