How a pinky finger just decided the biggest college game in America

The biggest game of college basketball in America came down to a pinky finger on Tuesday.

The University of Virginia Cavaliers took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the NCAA Tournament national title 85-77.

The tournament win capped an arc of redemption for Virginia, who came into last year’s tournament ranked number one, but fell in the first round.

There were no such upsets this time around, with the Cavs rallying from being down three with 15 seconds left in regulation, to forcing overtime on a huge shot from DeAndre Hunter.

His triple tied the game, forcing the NCAA championship to overtime for the first time in 11 years.

The end of overtime didn’t come without controversy.

Down by two with less than two minutes left of extra time, Texas Tech’s Davide Moretti chased down a loose ball, looking to score.

Virginia’s Hunter was able to poke the ball out of bounds, but the referees decided to make use of the replay rule.

The vision showed it was actually Moretti who last touched the ball before it went out, grazing his pinky after Hunter’s defensive play.

The resulting turnover was a crushing blow for Tech, with the Cavaliers able to make the most of their good fortune.

Virginia broke the game open in the dying stages, claiming the eight-point win.

Fans divided on replay usage

While the referees made the correct call in determining the ball last came off Moretti, basketball fans were nonetheless divided over the usage of replay.

Many said that because it was Hunter who made the play to get the ball out of bounds, the original call should have stood.
