The Olympic rings are one of the most recognisable symbols in the world.

But what do they actually mean?

When the rings were created in 1913, the five colours blue, yellow, black, green and red and the white background represented the colours of the flags of all the nations at the time.

According to the Olympic Charter, the Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic movement and represents the Union of the Five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.
