The Open 2024 LIVE: Golf leaderboard and scores from round two as Shane Lowry takes clubhouse lead

Shane Lowry holds the clubhouse lead after round two of the 152nd Open Championship, in pursuit of his second Claret Jug, with English major debutant Daniel Brown and Justin Rose on his tail.

Lowry added a second round of 69 to his opening 66 for a halfway total of seven under par which always looked insurmountable due to a strengthening wind causing havoc for the later starters.

The 2019 champion recovered from a double bogey on the 11th with birdies on the 16th and 18th to hold a two-shot lead over the English duo of Justin Rose and Dan Brown, who both had to come through 36-hole final qualifiers earlier this month. Brown, who had completed a flawless 65 at 9.33pm on Thursday, battled to a second round of 72, while Rose returned a superb 68 and has amazingly dropped just one shot in 36 holes.

But Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods missed the cut after struggling once more.

The reigning champion Brian Harman pushes his tee shot on the par-three 17th just over the back of the green. he dinks a lovely chip close, though, and that should be his par. At +5, he’s got a couple of shots leeway to make the cut.

Hatton is angry after missing a par putt on the 16th, and that’s a bogey. With that, he slides back to +7 and that will mean missing the cut. Four bogeys on the back nine have undone his good work earlier in the day.

MacIntyre started the day with two triple bogeys. He ends it with a three-under-par back nine to stick around tomorrow, on +5.

Rory McIlroy blasts a 383-yard drive down the middle of the fairway on 16 and that’s as good a tee shot as we’ll see all week there. Unfortunately, it counts for little when you’re on +12, but he seemed to enjoy that one.

Up ahead on 17, DeChambeau hacks out of the thick grass, through the green and down the other side into a little furrow. He kicks his club. He’s going to miss the cut too.

Bryson DeChambeau can only par the par-five 16th and that is a golden opportunity missed. He’s on +8 going into the final two holes and needs a birdie-birdie finish now.

Rahm makes a tidy up and down to par the 17th after missing the green with his tee shot. He’s on +1 going to the last.

It looks like +6 is going to be the cut, and that’s good news for Bob MacIntyre, who hits back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to give himself a great chance of being here on the weekend.

Oh no – a mistake by Rahm, who overhits his lay-up on the par-five 16th and runs into the burn trickling across the fairway. He had done so well to get to -1 and in contention but he’s going to fall back now.

Justin Rose speaks on the conditions today at Troon: “I think today it tipped over the edge where the elements were in control, meaning that you were aiming right of a pin and slicing the ball and seeing the ball hook. So the wind had all the control on the ball. The player couldn’t have control over the wind. I think that’s the tipping point today. Yesterday I felt like it was playable, a fair fight. Today was a bit more survival.”

Rahm lasers in a birdie on 15 to get level par, and if he can keep this form up he could well be in contention over the weekend.

On 17, Niemann has made some shots back from the horror at the Postage Stamp and he’s at level too.

MacIntyre gets a birdie at 15 too, and he moves to +6 just as the projected cut does too.

On 13, Hatton overcooks his approach with the iron and he’s looking at moving back to +6 himself.

No sign of a recovery from Hovland either on 14, as his tee shot overruns the pin by a distance.

The projected cut stands at +5, so there’ll be some worried players out there.

MacIntyre birdies the 15th to give himself hope.

On the par-three 14th, DeChambeau’s tee shot has too much on it and he’s not happy as it finds the bunker. He needs to find three shots over the next five holes, and he’s not getting one here.

Harman attempts to ensure his weekend place with a good tee shot, and he drains the putt for a birdie and +4.

Hatton misses the par shot by quite a distance and he could be double bogeying here – he does, moving to +5.

Homa triple bogeys for +6. It’s falling apart for some here.

At the other end of the spectrum, Rahm is looking dialled in after a monster drive is followed by a chip that gets him within birdie distance.

Rahm with another birdie opportunity as a brilliant drive goes high and lands within a few feet of the pin. He sinks the putt and moves to +1. His tee shot on 15 is good too, catching the wind to sail onto the fairway.

MacIntyre has the half-chance at the birdie, but it’s inches wide and he’ll stay on +7. McIlroy is showing no signs of improvement yet.

And there’s a late nightmare for Homa as his second shot flies into one of the on-course lounges.

Henley continues his bad day with a bogey on 14, taking him to +3.

McIlroy slices his tee shot off 13 – that’s a man who needs his round to finish ASAP. DeChambeau’s effort is better but still finds the rough, and he needs to find some form quickly if he’s going to be playing at the weekend. He’s on +8.

It’s not looking encouraging for MacIntyre either, as he fails to make it in regulation on 13, but his third shot puts him within a few feet of the pin.

Hatton’s had a bit of luck though, as the ball he hit out has been dropped fairly close to the green. That’ll save him a couple of shots, as his putt attempt lands within tap-in distance.

Henley, who’s dropped four shots so far today, looks to claw back some hope as he tees off on 12.

Rahm tees off on 12th and carries well, giving him a good chance of making the green in regulation. Fleetwood tees off looking to sneak back into the cut, but it swings wide and lands in the rough.

McIlroy’s second shot on 10 sets him up for a birdie shot, but you wouldn’t back him at this point.

On 11, Rahm skims the hole as he looks for the birdie, and he’ll take par. Hatton makes par on nine to stay at +2, while Henley falls back off the green on 12 and will stay on +1 at best.

On 10, Rahm’s second shot is pulled left and he won’t be gaining a shot here.

Harman moves to +6 as he fails to save par despite escaping the sand on eight. Hatton has clawed his way back to +2, and he should be sure of making the cut.

On nine, DeChambeau guides the chip in to birdie and move to +6, right on the edge if the cut. It may be enough depending on how the wind holds up.

Big cheers as Rory McIlroy tees off, looking to improve his score of +7. It’s a great effort, carrying far and avoiding the fairway bunkers. He follows it up with a shot onto the green, but it’ll be par likely.

Can he do-si-do down for a four? Playing partner Jordan Spieth gives him a good read, failing to make his birdie putt from a similar spot...but Scheffler can’t make it stick. A bogey at the last and a 70 for Scheffler.

Two-under, though, is handy at this juncture.

Bob McIntyre would have been happy enough at +1 overnight, thinking a good round today could set him up for a weekend title charge after winning the Scottish Open last weekend. Alas, it’s all gone wrong, rather, on the first, finding rough with drive and approach and then up against the wall of one of those devilishly deep bunkers.

And in the sand he will stay as he cloths his effort into the brickwork! A nightmare. He pops it out at the second attempt but an opening seven sends him tumbling down the leaderboard.

-5 Lowry; -4 Brown; -2 Noren, Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

Not a great start for Thomas as he drops another shot on the fourth and moves to -1.

Scheffler produces a lovely shot to dig himself out of the rough and find the green with his second shot of the 13th, and he’s somehow created a birdie chance for himself, but he has to settle for par.

Lowry produces a big par save as he gets up and down on 14 to stay in the lead. He’s irritated with his tee shot on 15 though, slicing it into the rough.

Schauffele and Cantlay are still battling through on -1, and the 16th gives the former a birdie opportunity that he narrowly misses. Cantlay follows by doing the same.

Elsewhere, Colin Morikawa, who’s currently on 15, has clawed his way back to +2.

Notable finishers so far include Horschel and Burmester on -2, Conners and Day on -1, and Dustin Johnson on +1.

-5 Lowry; -4 Brown; -2 Thomas, Noren, Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

Lowry secures par on the 13th, while Brown’s approach on the ninth finds the first cut. He gets to the green with his third shot, but skims the hole with his putt for par and he moves to -4.

Schauffele tees off on 16 and finds the middle of the fairway, and Cantlay follows by cutting left and finding the rough.

Thomas clips out the bunker on the third, and after taking a sand shower he makes the green with his third shot, but he doesn’t look confident of the scramble.

-5 Lowry, Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Rose, Hojgaard, Hughes and more

A great chip from Scheffler means he’ll probably save par on the 12th – he does, and that’s seven in a row.

Thomas has dropped a shot on the second and he moves to -2.

Brown tees off on the ninth and he finds the fairway. Lowry finds the green on the 13th and sets himself up for a birdie shot.

On 16, Schauffele’s approach finds the green, but it’ll be par at best to stay on -1.

Spieth has the birdie chance on the 12th, but he’ll have to settle for par and remaining on +3.

Woods has climbed to +13 as he navigates the 15th. A disappointing two days for the 15-time major winner.

A more promising day comes to an end for Burmester as the South African misses the birdie shot on 18 and will head into the clubhouse on -2.

On 14, Schauffele sinks the putt for par to stay on -1. Cantlay, who’s dropped to -1 too, also makes par.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Hughes and more

So Lowry’s ball from his second shot was found, and he’s now taking his fourth shot from the fairway in line with where that landed in the bushes. It’ll be a double bogey at best, and he lands just short of the green with the fourth shot.

The Irishman’s putt attempt lands wide but he should tap in for a double bogey...and he does, so he moves down to five under.

Meanwhile Brown chips his own effort onto the green on the seventh, and he’ll have a slim chance of the birdie and probably an outright lead.

Jason Day is making his approach on the 18th and he makes the green for a birdie chance as he looks to finish on -2.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Hughes and more

Schauffele couldn’t save par as Cantlay did, so he moves down to -1.

Lowry is currently waiting for the solution to his problem, as it looks like his second ball was found. It didn’t originally seem like it was a provisional.

Alex Noren has fallen back to -2 after a bogey on the fourth. Schauffele, who’s deep in the rough as he lines up his approach on the 13th, salvages a chance at a birdie with a great chip onto the green.

Cantlay makes par on the 12th to stay on -2 and -4 for the day.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas, Noren; -2 Horschel, Cantlay, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Hojgaard has teed off, but it’s not the start he wanted as he hooks it into the rough. Adam Scott follows with a better effort, landing central on the fairway.

Lowry tees off on the 11th and it pushes left, landing in the rough. He’s 177 yards from the pin, and it’s so unlucky as he hooks it across the fairway and into the crowd and the bushes on the other side. He makes the green with his fourth shot, but it’ll be a bogey at best.

Scheffler has finished the front nine with a par, and he’s lurking near the chasing group on -1. His tee shot on the 10th finds the rough though.

Spieth, who’s still on even par, shouts an expletive as he tees off on the 10th. Not happy.

Alex Noren can’t capitalise on his birdie on the second, making par on the third to stay tied on -3. Thomas, the other player on -3, tees off at 12:53.

Noren has moved up to -3 after securing that birdie on the second. Brown tees off on the par-three fifth and avoids the greenside bunkers, so looks set for par at least.

Horschel’s approach on the 18th is okay, but he’ll make par at best. Burmester drops a shot on the 14th to move down to -1.

Morikawa misses the putt for par and moves to +4 – as it stands he’s not making the cut, but a lot will likely change.

-7 Lowry; -5 Brown; -3 Thomas; -2 Horschel, Burmester, Schauffele, Hughes and more

Cantlay misses the birdie shot in the end, as does Horschel, and they stay on one and two under respectively.

Lowry has a 35-foot putt for birdie on the ninth, so it’s asking a lot – and he goes just wide. He’ll finish the front nine on two underfoot the day.

Schauffele tees off on the problematic par-four 11th and it’s a great effort from blind, landing on the fairway.

Koepka goes for the birdie on the 11th but he skims it, and he’s staying on +1.

Woods makes par on 10, but he’ll have very little chance of making the cut of course.

Alex Noren has started for the day too, making par on the first hole before setting up a great chance for an early birdie on the second.

Brown makes the up and down for the bogey, and he goes to -5.

Cantlay will get the chance to move to two under after a good approach shot, while Spieth might move to -1 after doing the same on the seventh.

Brown’s ball is lying deep in the rough but he hooks it out and could save par on the fourth – but he won’t now as the third shot finds the first cut.

Woods misses the putt for par on the ninth and he enters the back nine on +11.

Tyrrell Hatton hits out at course at The Open: ‘Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going’

Friday 19 July 2024 10:14 , Luke Baker

Tyrrell Hatton hit out at Royal Troon after a difficult first round at The Open, suggesting that the Ayrshire links course has been made overly long and is no longer enjoyable to play.

The Englishman shot an opening round 73 to sit eight shots back at two-over-par, recording 16 pars and a pair of bogeys on Thursday.

The combustable 32-year-old is seldom afraid to speak his mind on courses, previously saying that Augusta doesn’t “suit my eye” ahead of The Masters.

Hatton believes that Troon, which has been lengthened by almost 200 yards since it last hosted The Open in 2016, has been overly extended, reflecting a trend of making courses longer to combat the bigger hitting golfers of today.

“There’s a few holes that are just obviously playing really long,” Hatton said after the opening round at the Ayrshire links. “Unfortunately, that’s where it’s going at the moment, where they just seem to try to make it longer to make it harder, which I think doesn’t make it the most enjoyable test.”

Marcel Siem charges up leaderboard in better conditions on day two of 152nd Open

Friday 19 July 2024 09:45 , Luke Baker

Germany’s Marcel Siem took advantage of more favourable conditions on the second day of the 152nd Open as a five-birdie blitz saw him charge up the leaderboard.

Royal Troon’s front nine is traditionally where most of the scoring can be done but Thursday’s winds made that more difficult.

However, with an easing of the breeze there were more opportunities to be had and the 44-year-old, playing in his seventh championship, took full advantage in the first group out and that offered hope to big-name stars like Rory McIlroy looking to get their tournaments back on track after a tough first day.

Tiger Woods frustrated by tough day at Troon

Friday 19 July 2024 06:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tiger Woods cut a frustrated figure as he laboured to an eight-over-par 79 in the first round of the Open at Royal Troon on Thursday.

The 15-time major winner rolled back the years when he holed a long putt for a birdie at the third but he fell away badly thereafter in a round that featured six bogeys and two doubles.

The 48-year-old’s efforts were also partly overshadowed by comments from TV commentator Mark Roe about his physical condition during his struggles on the Ayrshire links.

Woods’ difficulties since being involved in a serious car accident three years ago, as well as after numerous back and knee operations, have been well documented and he now plays a limited schedule.

Roe, a former European Tour professional, said on a ‘featured groups’ international TV feed overseen by organisers the R&A: “You look at the eyes, you’ve got to think there’s a lot of painkillers being taken to cope with the pain. It’s not easy.”

Woods was not asked about the matter as he took only four questions after his round, but has spoken about his problems previously, revealing at the 2023 Masters he felt “constant” pain in his right leg.

He has also admitted seeking professional help to manage medication issues in the past.

Justin Thomas heading in ‘right direction’ after impressive start to Open

Friday 19 July 2024 06:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

A year after crashing out of the Open having made “bonehead mistakes”, Justin Thomas is a lot happier with his game after shooting a three-under 68 to take an early lead at Royal Troon.

Missing the cut by eight shots at Hoylake 12 months ago had the American worrying for his Ryder Cup place – although he would subsequently receive a captain’s pick – as he was struggling to find any form.

While things have picked up for him this year with five top-10 finishes, including eighth at last month’s US Open, he failed to make the weekend at the Masters or US PGA.

Paul McGinley believes Jon Rahm is ‘hoping for a deal’ between PGA Tour and LIV

Friday 19 July 2024 06:30 , Mike Jones

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes an unhappy Jon Rahm is hoping for a deal between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour to revive his game.

Rahm has finished in the top 10 of all nine LIV events he has played since his shock move to the Saudi-funded breakaway, but his performances in this year’s majors have been hugely disappointing.

Matt Wallace cards first eagle of the 152nd Open to share lead early on day one

Friday 19 July 2024 06:25 , Mike Jones

England’s Matt Wallace carded the first eagle of the 152nd Open Championship to catapult himself into a share of the lead at Royal Troon on a testing first morning of unfamiliar winds and intermittent showers.

The 34-year-old had to come through final qualifying last year only to miss the cut at Hoylake but had no such worries this summer after finishing 20th on the DP World Tour rankings.

He had a brilliant start as, after a birdie at the second, he holed out from the semi-rough at the 612-yard fourth to leap to three under and into a share of the lead with American two-time major winner Justin Thomas, who himself missed the cut last year, after he birdied seven and eight.

Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau at wrong end of Open leaderboard on day one

US Open rivals Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau found themselves together at the wrong end of the leaderboard on day one of the 152nd Open.

A month after McIlroy’s nightmare finish at Pinehurst helped DeChambeau claim a second US Open title, the pair were facing an uphill battle simply to make the cut in the year’s final major at Royal Troon.

McIlroy was level par after seven holes of his opening round before running up a double bogey on the signature par-three eighth, the Northern Irishman’s first attempt to escape a bunker on the Postage Stamp coming back to his feet.

Rory McIlroy way off Open lead after not adapting well enough to conditions

Thursday 18 July 2024 17:42 , Mike Jones

A downbeat Rory McIlroy effectively dismissed his chances of mounting a challenge for the 152nd Open after struggling to an opening 78 at Royal Troon.

McIlroy was level par after seven holes before running up a double bogey on the signature par-three eighth, the Northern Irishman’s first attempt to escape a bunker on the Postage Stamp coming back to his feet.

With the back nine playing downwind McIlroy was hopeful of repairing the damage, only to drive out of bounds on the 11th to run up another double bogey and eventually finish seven over par, 10 shots behind clubhouse leader Justin Thomas.
