NRL world left shattered for Adam Reynolds after 'horrible' news about Broncos captain

The veteran halfback went down with another injury against the Melbourne Storm.

NRL fans and commentators have expressed their heartache for Adam Reynolds after the Brisbane Broncos captain suffered another injury on Thursday night. Reynolds went down with what the Broncos are calling a hamstring injury just before half-time in Brisbane's loss to the Melbourne Storm.

Reynolds has already missed games this year with a recurrence of a knee injury, and has now suffered damage to the hamstring on the same leg. Thankfully he has seemingly avoided another knee injury, but he will need to undergo scans to determine the extent of the damage to his hamstring.

A distraught Reynolds was seen in tears at half-time in the Broncos dressing rooms, and he cut a forlorn figure as he watched the second half from the bench. "It just tightened up in that first half," he said after the match.

"It didn't feel too good at half-time but I will get back to Brisbane, get a scan and go from there. I felt it early on in the game and it gradually got worse ... I was trying to get through to half-time to see where I was but then I saw a bit of space on the short side and tried to take off and it didn't feel too good there."

The injury to Reynolds compounds the Broncos' injury woes, with Payne Haas, Reece Walsh and Brendan Piakura also sidelined. To add insult to injury, the Storm mounted a stirring comeback to prevail 34-32 at AAMI Park.

“You can’t expect to win a game of footy when they score that many tries,” Brisbane coach Kevin Walters said. “I mean, there’s plenty of effort and I can’t fault them there with their effort and we lost Adam at half-time. So that was a pretty big disruption for us.

“But we just weren’t quite there defensively tonight, and that’s the most annoying thing because there’s lots of effort. I feel sorry for them in there because so much effort went in, you know, and just a couple of little sloppy areas and concede points and against a team like the Storm who are always at you. We need to learn from this tonight and certainly be better moving forward.”

NRL world left heartbroken over Adam Reynolds injury

Fans and commentators were left devastated by the scenes of Reynolds in tears at half-time. “You can see the devastation on his face, it doesn’t look like he’s coming back,” Michael Ennis said on Fox League. “This is a devastating blow for Brisbane.”

Journalist Mark Gottlieb wrote on social media: “Gee, you don’t often see Adam Reynolds show that kind of emotion. Looks shattered in the sheds. Another knee injury would be so frustrating.”

On Channel Nine, Andrew Johns asked if the Broncos can win the competition if Reynolds is continually hampered. Cameron Smith replied: “It makes it more difficult for a couple of reasons.

“First up is his experience. He’s been around the game a long time and showed his experience last year taking it all the way to the grand final and nearly won it against the Panthers but his kicking game we have discussed how good it is. Or how good it has been tonight. Possibly the best kicking game in the competition.

“You thought it might have been a reoccurrence of a knee problem but I don’t know whether it’s a positive thing that may be hamstring related but certainly Adam Reynolds was most upset. You can see most downtrodden on the bench. Just can’t get the momentum with his body.”
