Alex McKinnon and wife Teigan Power have reportedly split after five years of marriage and 12 years together.

Respected rugby league journalist Danny Weidler broke the sad news on Sunday, saying the pair separated in January.

Teigan’s social media feeds have been littered with comments that McKinnon no longer appears in her photos.

She also doesn't appear to be wearing a wedding ring in her most recent posts.

Teigan hadn't posted a photo with McKinnon for months until he reappeared in some snaps she posted on Saturday celebrating the first birthday of twin daughters Audrey and Violet.

The couple have three daughters together, all under the age of four.

"There is no ill will between the pair, who privately concede that after 12 years together, from the time they were high school sweethearts, they are now more likely to find happiness on their own," Weidler reports, saying the "stress" of trying to raise a family together "took its toll on the pair".

McKinnon and Power are said to be committed to co-parenting their daughters, but will do so as friends.

Weidler reports that McKinnon declined to comment on the split but said he will do so when the time is right, acknowledging the public interest in the story.

McKinnon was left a quadriplegic in 2014 when he suffered spinal injuries in a game for the Newcastle Knights against the Melbourne Storm.

He played 49 NRL games between Newcastle and the St George Illawarra Dragons before his career was tragically cut short.

Speaking in 2020, McKinnon admitted hatred towards Melbourne captain Cameron Smith had consumed him for some time after the incident.

Smith had questioned the referee for penalising the Storm for the tackle that injured McKinnon, seemingly accusing McKinnon of ducking his head.

"I have no emotion when it comes to Cameron Smith these days," McKinnon told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I have forgiven everything that happened straight after the tackle, his response - I have forgiven him. It’s hard to hold on to hate. It really is. It’s wasted energy. It’s blinding.

"At its worst, it can consume you and I’ll admit it did for a while there."

Alex McKinnon and Teigan Power's love story

McKinnon has since worked in recruitment for the Knights and is currently at Fox Sports as an analyst.

The 30-year-old proposed to Power from his hospital bed before rising from his wheelchair at their wedding in 2017.

Speaking last year after the birth of their twins, McKinnon said: “Teigan was her typical brilliant self — brave, strong and just amazing.

“It’s just so special and again I’m so thankful that Teigan and the girls are all doing so well.

"We're extremely grateful - with a million different emotions.

"I'm still trying to get my head around all that stuff like two baby seats, two cots, two high chairs… it's amazing how the rollercoaster of life works.

"I'm an only child and so we always wanted a big family. I guess we've got our wish, that's for sure."

The couple welcomed eldest daughter Harriet in 2018.
