Mal Meninga urged to axe 'd***head' Josh McGuire from Australian team

Josh McGuire’s latest charge for a facial on an opponent has drawn the ire of league legend Mark ‘Spudd’ Carroll, who has urged Mal Meninga to drop him from the Kangaroos.

The North Queensland Cowboys enforcer was heavily criticised after appearing to touch the face of Brisbane’s David Fifita while he was pinned in a tackle.

'CAN’T DO THAT': NRL legends slam Josh McGuire over latest ugly act

It’s the third time McGuire has been cited for such an act this season, having escaped with heavy fines for similar incidents with Melbourne’s Cameron Munster in round five, and Manly’s Dylan Walker in round 13.

The NRL revealed obscured footage helped McGuire escape a more serious sanction for the Munster incident, while Walker did not complain of an eye gouge after McGuire’s hand strayed across his face.

McGuire faces a grade-two charge for contrary conduct after the Fifita incident, which was clearly the last straw for Carroll.

Speaking on NRL Tonight, Carroll said enough was enough.

“I've called him the human grub, because we can't have this in our game," Carroll said.

"In my game 20 years ago, if that happened in our game we would fix him up.

“These guys are too afraid to get up and start swinging punches because they are worried about getting sent off.

“If he was up for selection for Australia Mal Meninga can’t pick him, at all.

“Mal works on a no d***head policy ... I’ll say no more. It’s a disgrace.”

NRL greats filthy with Josh McGuire

League legend Andrew Johns was highly critical of McGuire after the game.

“You can’t do that. I don’t know where his thumb is, if it goes anywhere near the eye,” Johns said on Channel Nine.

“I thought he was lucky earlier in the year to get off, there was one up here where there was a bit of argy-bargy around someone’s eye.

“The funny thing is, in years gone by when it was the wild west playing footy in the 70s and 80s, if you trip someone, straight off. Now you get a fine.

“If you eye-gouged someone, 12 months gone, now you get a slap on the wrist or a fine. It’s a no-no.

“If someone can’t defend themselves, putting your hands or thumb near their eye, we’ve got to get that out of the game.”

Billy Slater added: “It was totally unnecessary, he didn’t need to put his hand anywhere near the face.”

“It’s going to create some attention this week for sure.”
