Nick Kyrgios called out by John McEnroe as Aussie trolls Wimbledon with commentary move

The Aussie has been receiving plenty of attention during his commentary gig.

Nick Kyrgios has garnered plenty of attention during his commentary gig at Wimbledon having sported a large puffer jacket in the middle of summer. The injured Aussie tennis star has been involved in the BBC commentary throughout the tournament as he looks to recover from a troublesome knee injury.

Kyrgios hasn't played a match in 2024 and was recently seen hitting with 24-time grand slam champion Djokovic at Wimbledon as he works his way back to fitness. And during his recovery, Kyrgios opted to take a commentary role in the UK for the major broadcaster. And the Aussie is still receiving plenty of attention from tennis fans due to his choice of outfits in the British summer.

During an interview alongside tennis great John McEnroe, Kyrgios was talking about the crowd's reaction to a controversial Djokovic post-match interview. And after the match, Kyrgios wore a massive Stone Island puffer jacket and a hat on centre court.

One fan wrote: "Nick Kyrgios in a jacket during the British summer is hilarious," having posted a photo of the interview. Another fan suggested Kyrgios was 'trolling' the British summer. And while Kyrgios may have not needed a huge puffer jacket, which was in contrast to his fellow commentators all wearing suits, the weather in London hasn't been warm.

Rain wreaked havoc at Wimbledon in the first week of the tournament with temperatures not exceeding 23C so far in July. Kyrgios was seen on another day wearing a hoodie for a BBC segment. Commentator Nick Mullins reference Kyrgios' warm choice of clothing having addressed the weather at Wimbledon in 2024.

“One or two threatening clouds but nothing significant and the roof is open and it feels almost summer-ish," Mullins said. “Nick has not got his big puffer jacket on which is always a sign of our climate.”

Kyrgios was happy to entertain the comment and replied: “No, that’s just style. “We gotta try and appeal to the younger fans, you know? They’ll understand where I’m going with that.” When pressed on why he can't wear the traditional suit and tie, Kyrgios said: “No, I love it. I don’t mind a bit of old school too but need to find that balance in this sport.”

John McEnroe and Nick Kyrgios share a laugh.

And tennis icon McEnroe also made sure to point out Kyrgios' fashion choices on air. Having noticed Kyrgios' relaxed choice of clothing while on the BBC, McEnroe opted to take a cheeky dig at the Aussie. “Give me a break he’s cold come on. When are you going to step up and get dressed up? You’re a good-looking guy. You are," McEnroe said.

“When are you going to dress up and wear a suit?” Kyrgios said he might concede if he is commentating the final. "Maybe for the final, let’s see," he added.

Alex de Minaur withdrew from his Wimbledon clash against Djokovic after injuring his hip during his round of 16 victory over Arthur Fils. And while there was devastating for de Minaur, the Aussie offered an insight into when he believes Kyrgios is returning to the tour.

"I've seen him hitting. I think it looks like he's feeling a little better," de Minaur said of the 2022 Wimbledon finalist. "As far as I know, I think the US hard-court season is when he's planning to return. I don't know the exact specifics, but it will all be depending on his injury and how he's feeling."
