A prominent former NHL star turned TV commentator has been suspended by the network who employs him after a racy and wildly inappropriate conversation, in which he discussed the prospect of having a threesome with his wife and a female co-worker.

Hockey analyst Jeremy Roenick, who moved into television after a 20-year professional career with five different NHL teams, was suspended without pay by NBC Sports after his guest spot on the Barstool Sports podcast ‘Spittin' Chiclets’.

The 49-year-old, who retired from professional hockey in 2009, made the comments after he was asked about a trip to Portugal he took with his wife, and colleague Kathryn Tappen, who is married for another former player, Patrick Sharp.

Roenick told a story about a woman approaching he, his wife and Tappen in a hotel pool, asking if both women were with him, which he said they were.

“And then Kathryn says, 'Will you shut up?' She starts yelling at me,” Roenick said.

“I play it off like, you know, we're going to bed together every night, the three of us.

“Now, if it really came to fruition that would really be good, but it's never going to happen.”

The bizarre conversation took another turn when Roenick brought Sharp into the conversation as well, saying he ‘wouldn’t say no’ to the idea of hooking up with his fellow former player.

“He is so beautiful. I'd have to think about it if he asked me,” Roenick said.

“I wouldn't say no right away.”

NBC tight-lipped on suspension

The NBC network has been tight-lipped on the suspension for Roenick, outside of confirming it had happened through a spokesperson.

Despite his odd tangents, Roenick stressed during the podcast interview that he had the utmost respect for colleagues Tappen and Sharp.

“She is as prepared as anyone. She wants people to respect her for her knowledge of sports, not just cause she's a pretty face,” Roenick said of Tappen.

"She is true blue one of my favourite people in the world, and I'm lucky that I'm next to her, and she's a good friend of mine.”
