Joe Burrow's draft day includes Pledge of Allegiance in mom's class and hair concerns
It’s a big night for LSU quarterback Joe Burrow as he’s expected to go No. 1 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL draft.
His life-changing day started with a throwback to being in high school as an honorary pledge helper for his mother, Robin, and included a note relatable to most during the COVID-19 crisis.
Burrow begins draft day with pledge
Robin Burrow is the principal at Eastern Elementary School in Meigs County, Ohio. As with other schools around the nation, her teachers and students are doing distance learning. And it starts off the day with the Pledge of Allegiance, just as it would do in the confines of the school walls.
So ahead of his selection at the NFL draft, Burrow joined the video call as the day’s official “pledge helper,” quoting the pledge with his mom and an American flag in the family’s living room.
The Miami Dolphins attempted to get the No. 1 pick from the Bengals, but the team didn’t budge. The Heisman Trophy winner is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the draft by Yahoo Sports’ Eric Edholm with a draft grade of “eventual all-pro.”
Burrow asks for leniency about look
The NFL draft will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 crisis just as the WNBA draft was done last week. The broadcast company sent equipment to prospects to set up multiple live camera angles to capture their reactions with their families and friends.
But that creates an issue for Burrow. As with most of the world, it’s been a while since the 6-foot-3, 221-pound star has had a haircut.

Burrow might end the day with a Facetime call from former Bengals star Chad Johnson, who said he’d attempt to share a celebratory cigar with the city’s latest quarterback.
