'Insane': Stunning detail in $540 million Tom Brady deal

Tom Brady may be enjoying the NFL off-season but the superstar quarterback is still making headlines, with details emerging about the 44-year-old's staggering new US$375 million ($AUD 540 million) contract.

Brady is still playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but has already got a job lined up when he decides to hang up his helmet - in the form of what is being described as the richest contract in sports broadcasting history.

Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch this week announced that Brady will be joining Fox Sports when he retires, taking the role of lead NFL analyst.

"We are pleased to announce that immediately following his playing career, seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady will be joining us at @FOXSports as our lead analyst," Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch said in a statement, describing Brady's signing as a "long-term agreement".

"We are delighted that Tom has committed to joining the Fox team and wish him all the best during this upcoming season," Murdoch added.

He'll be calling games with Kevin Burkhardt, who is replacing Joe Buck this season after Buck and his broadcast partner Troy Aikman left for ESPN earlier this year.

With Burkhardt in the Buck seat, Brady will essentially be the new Aikman — whenever he retires, that is.

Tom Brady to step into broadcasting when he retires

In a tweet shortly after Murdoch made the announcement, Brady said — as he has many times over the years — that he has "unfinished business" to take care of in the NFL first.

Murdoch said that Brady “will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives.”

The Fox CEO also said that the timeline for Brady to join Fox Sports is uncertain, likely meaning that he hasn't revealed to Fox when he's going to permanently retire.

Brady, 44, surprised everyone when he announced his retirement in January, only to reverse his decision about 40 days later. But this news means that retirement is definitely still on his mind.

The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reported that Brady's deal with Fox is worth an eye-watering US$375 million ($AUD 540 million) over 10 years.

The figure is more than double what other NFL broadcasters make.

If confirmed, those figures exceed Brady's annual salary with the Buccaneers, which last year came in at around US$30 million. The Post described Brady's deal as the largest contract in sportscasting history.

Buck will reportedly make between $12 million and $15 million a year at ESPN. His broadcast partner Troy Aikman will make $18 million at ESPN, as will CBS' Tony Romo.

Not surprisingly, news of Brady's deal has left the sporting world in disbelief.
