Neymar's latest act of petulance riles football fans
Neymar has again shown why he’s one of the most divisive figures in world football after a comical incident in his side’s Champions League win.
The Brazilian’s Paris St Germain side revived their European campaign with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in Group C, leaving the English club’s hopes of reaching the last 16 hanging in the balance.
Neymar scored Paris Saint-Germain’s second goal against Liverpool on Wednesday and, in the process, set yet another record by surpassing a Brazilian legend.
With his goal, the PSG star moved past Kaka as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.
The goal was Neymar’s 31st in the competition, one better than the 30 scored by Kaka throughout his stays with AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Sitting in third place is Brazilian legend Rivaldo, who scored 27 during stints with Barcelona and AC Milan.
However, as is often the case with Neymar, the brilliance went hand-in-hand with the bizarre as a funny second half incident highlighted.
PSG had possession of the ball near the halfway line when Neymar decided to turn his back on play and gesture angrily towards the crowd.
Neymar’s timing couldn’t have been worse as one of his teammates then fired a pass that went straight past the oblivious Brazilian.
Fans were quick to stick the boot into the Brazilian on social media, many accusing him of play-acting throughout the contest as well.
PSG went in front in the 13th minute through Juan Bernat, before Neymar made it 2-0 eight minutes before half-time after another lightning PSG counter attack.
Yet with PSG in cruise control, Angel Di Maria needlessly brought down Sadio Mane to concede a penalty, which James Milner converted in first-half stoppage time.
Liverpool could not find an equaliser and head into their final group game against Napoli needing to win 1-0 or by two goals or more to guarantee their spot in the knockout stages, while a PSG win over Red Star Belgrade will see them through.
Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson admitted they were disappointed by the manner of their performance, after failing to lay a glove on PSG following the penalty late in the first half.
“We are disappointed because we felt we are good enough to come here and win,” he told BT Sport. “It wasn’t our night but we kept going.
“We have to keep it in our own hands by winning at Anfield.”
Napoli meanwhile defeated Milos Degenek’s Red Star Belgrade 3-1 with goals from Marek Hamsik in the 11th minute, and Dries Mertens in the 33rd and 52nd before El Fardou Ben Nabouhane pulled one back for the visitors.
In London, Christian Eriksen rescued Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of reaching the last 16 when he came off the bench to score a late winner in his side’s 1-0 victory over Inter Milan at Wembley.
Inter, needing just a draw to reach the knockout rounds at Tottenham’s expense, were holding firm until Eriksen smashed home his side’s winner in the 80th minute.
The win meant Tottenham and Inter both have seven points in Group B but Tottenham leapfrogged the Italians into second place by virtue of their head-to-head record.
Relief for Spurs!

Eriksen turned his attention to the Nou Camp and Barcelona.
The Denmark international told BT Sport 3: “We still have one more game to go. We’re not really there yet.
“Our focus was to win this and now our next one is Barca. It will be tough game but a fun game because we know what we have to play for. It was nice to come on and score a goal.”
Barcelona – already assured of progress – sealed top spot with Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique scoring in the second half in a 2-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven, who pulled one back with a Luuk de Jong header.
Borussia Dortmund advanced in a 0-0 draw with Club Brugge to join Atletico Madrid, Porto and Schalke who all reached the last 16 with a match to spare.
They join title-holders Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester clubs City and United, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Roma and Ajax in the knockout stage.
First-half goals from Koke and Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico a 2-0 win over Monaco 2-0.
In Russia, Lokomotiv Moscow beat Galatasaray 2-0 which meant both Porto and Schalke progressed from Group D even before the Portuguese outfit’s 3-1 win over the German club.
