Glacier mountain bike race results in utter carnage

Ever wondered what it's like to hurtle down a 3000-metre high glacier on a mountain bike? Well you don't have to wonder any more.

At the recent Megavalanche mountain bike event in the French Alps, the world's best riders put it all on the line on a treacherous 32km course down a glacier.

As the above video shows, carnage ensues as the riders hurtle down the deadly steep 3300m high glaciated mountain.

The riders descend from the summit of Mount Blanc and drop more than 2000m as they navigate a winding course to the valley bottom at Allemont.

It is regarded as the toughest endurance mountain bike event in the world.

Kiwi rider Jamie Nicholl has provided a first hand view of the action, filming his run with a helmet-mounted camera.

The amazing footage shows competitors slip, slide and drop like flies.

The Kiwi rider somehow manages to escape injury and, finishing seventh in a field of around 2500.
