Snapshot of day 30 at the World Cup

SNAPSHOT OF DAY 30 AT THE WORLD CUP:

AT A GLANCE: The Netherlands thump Brazil 3-0 to claim third place at the World Cup.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Robin Van Persie. Van Persie was influential from the start. He served Arjen Robben a wonderful deep ball which led to an early penalty for the Dutch skipper to convert. His performance was far more polished than his semi-final display against Argentina.

TALKING POINT: Brazil's World Cup. The hosts exit finishing fourth following their third place playoff loss. The defeat added more misery after the 7-1 semi-final humiliation by Germany. Overall Brazil conceded 14 goals for the tournament, the most ever for the team. Their previous worst had been 11 goals in the 1938 World Cup.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "We didn't deserve to have it end like this. But unfortunately it's football. I have to apologise to our people. They booed in the end, but it was normal. They have feelings too." - Brazil captain Thiago Silva.

STAT OF THE DAY: 40. The number of years since Brazil have lost consecutive World Cup matches - the last time was in 1974.
