Netherlands vs Ecuador LIVE!

Ecuador's "Superman" captain Enner Valencia led a feisty fightback on Friday as the South Americans drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Group A to keep both teams in the running for the last-16 while ending hosts Qatar's chances of qualifying.

Valencia, 33, tapped in his third goal of the tournament from a rebound in the second half after Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead in the sixth minute with a sizzling shot in a result that advanced both sides to four points.

Qatar lost their second successive game at their debut World Cup earlier on Friday to Senegal and are eliminated. The African champions are third in the group with Ecuador to come in Tuesday's final group games.

Highlights: The leveller

No VAR needed for this one, as Enner Valencia nudged Ecuador level.

That result confirms it...

Qatar are OUT!

The earliest host nation to exit a World Cup, ever.

FULL TIME! Netherlands 1-1 Ecuador

17:56 , Marc Mayo

All square in Group A!

17:55 , Marc Mayo

90+5 mins: It’s all Ecuador at the death - which cannot be a surprise given the nature of the last 45 minutes, plus!

A corner from Sarmiento is cleared well by Van Dijk and the Dutch win a throw.

17:53 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: Rodriguez is looking a threat and forces Ake to slide the ball into touch by his own corner flag.

17:51 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Six minutes added on after that stoppage.

And Rodriguez blocks a clearance from Noppert - but it lands wide of the net!

17:50 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Valencia departs on a stretcher.

Hate to see that, the World Cup top scorer’s tournament may be over.

Rodriguez is on, as is Ibarra for Plata.

17:47 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: An issue for Ecuador!

Valencia is down off the ball, is it that injury he was contending with pre-game coming back?

17:46 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: A chance for the Netherlands to load the box with a deep free-kick... and it doesn’t beat the first man.

17:43 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Depay spins his man and bursts towards the final third but Torres is hot on his case, lumping the ball clear.

All a bit slow and predictable from the Netherlands.

17:41 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Estupinan continues to cause problems and wins a corner.

In it swings from the left-back and Van Dijk flicks clear before Preciado volleys a shot high over the bar. Speculative.

Netherlands substitutions

17:39 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: Timber sends Mendez tumbling and the Dutch go to their bench.

Gakpo’s race is run, he and Koopmeiners come off for Weghorst and De Roon.

Not long left...

17:37 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: We’re drifting gently towards a conclusion here.

With Qatar up next, does the point actually suit the Dutch?

Ecuador substitution

17:34 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Speaking of Brighton, here comes their third La Tri representative as Sarmiento replaces Estrada.

17:31 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: Estupinan does well to win a foul off Gakpo in his own half, but Ecuador only lump it back to Noppert.

Another fine display from the Brighton man so far, they must have a very decent left-back scout!

17:29 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Just a little edging up of Dutch pressure in the last few minutes, can they get Depay in the game?

Berghuis replaces Klaassen.

17:26 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Koopmeiners flies a 20-yard effort way off target after nice work by Klaassen and Gakpo. That one looked like it came off his ankle.

17:24 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: Ake gets in to deny Estrada after a smart cut-back by Valencia.

The Netherlands are looking rather ropy...

17:21 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: We look set for a granstand finish here in Doha.

Watch back Ecuador’s levelling goal:

POST!

17:20 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: ECUADOR NEARLY LEAD!

Preciado pulls off a stepover on the right and crosses for Valencia, who is denied by a fine block.

It comes to Plata who unleashes a delightful strike which whacks the underside of the crossbar and bounces away!

17:17 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: Mendez goes in the book for a late challenge on Depay. He’s now suspended for the Senegal decider.

17:14 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Ecuador do deserve that goal, the Netherlands have looked limp since their early goal.

A huge test of the Dutch now.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLLL!!! Netherlands 1-1 Ecuador

17:09 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: VALENCIA WITH A TAP-IN!

Was he offside?!

Estupinan drove a shot at goal and Noppert’s parry landed at Valencia’s feet, and he was certainly onside due to Ake’s positioning.

Game on!

17:08 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Depay and Gakpo up front for the Netherlands is a pretty mean setup but the Barcelona man has barely played this year, having fallen out of favour and been hit by a hamstring injury.

Kick off!

17:05 , Marc Mayo

Depay on for Bergwijn for the Dutch.

Second half coming up!

17:01 , Marc Mayo

Ecuador will be content to continue as they finished the last half, so will we see some added impetus from the Netherlands?

A two-goal lead should seal their passage to the last 16.

That disallowed goal

16:55 , Marc Mayo

Was it right to be ruled out? There was a man in the goalkeeper’s view...

Half time! Netherlands 1-0 Ecuador

16:49 , Marc Mayo

A timely reminder that this game is far from over at the break.

GGGOOOO-NO!

16:49 , Marc Mayo

45+3 mins: The corner is drilled back into the box and takes a touch into the net, Estupinan wheels away!

But the flag goes up as Porozo is adjudged to have obstructed the goalkeeper’s view from an offside position.

16:47 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: One last time for Ecuador to load the box and Estupinan’s out-swinger is a fine ball in!

Up goes Valencia but his header down bounces off Ake for a corner.

16:45 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Not a huge surprise to see a relatively limited amount of added-on time, just three minutes.

16:41 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Into the final five of the half with Valencia and Dumfries having a bit of a to-do off the ball. Play on.

16:38 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: An interesting discussion between Caicedo and De Jong after the Ecuador man hits the deck but concedes a foul for handball.

He can talk it over all he likes - the referee had made his call!

16:35 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: The lesson of this tournament has been do not rest on a one-goal lead - just ask Germany, Argentina and even Portugal had a scare last night.

The Netherlands have simply not put together a period of sustained pressure since Gakpo’s strike.

Will they get punished, or kick it up a gear?

SAVE!

16:32 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: Valencia picks up a nice crossfield ball, cuts onto his right and shoots early - forcing Noppert down low to his right to parry clear!

16:31 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: The Netherlands offer a reply but a corner comes to nothing.

Just that Gakpo goal separating the teams after half an hour.

CHANCE ECUADOR!

16:28 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Good work down the left from Valencia leads to a gentle flick across goal by Estrada, but it fails to land at a teammate’s foot and Ecuador settle for a corner.

A poor cross is cleared at the near post.

16:25 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: Fantastic ball in by Estupinan! And a fine header away from Van Dijk as he faced his own goal.

Good play all round as the game ramps up just a touch.

16:24 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Bergwijn gets his first run on the ball and the ex-Tottenham man looks threatening but Ecuador get the throw.

Forward come La Tri and a good ball in is just behind the attackers.

Caicedo has a slash at goal blocked before he breaks in down the left, and a smart toe in clears the Dutch lines.

16:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: The camera shows Memphis Depay on the Netherlands bench, he may struggle to get on the pitch with Gakpo going so well.

Ecuador yet to make their mark on the game, Estrada wins a free-kick off Koopmeiners in the centre circle and the South Americans look happy to bide their time on the ball.

16:18 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: A long way to go yet but as things stand, the Dutch would qualify for the last-16 with England’s Group B meeting the top two from this group.

16:15 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: The irony of the goal is that Netherlands have not looked particularly useful in the final third when Gakpo has not been involved.

Koopmeiners looks to get in the box and a bit of scrappy play sees Ecuador clear.

16:11 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Ecuador put the ball into the box and a bouncing half-volley at the far post causes a bit of worry for the Netherlands, who get it clear.

Watch back Gakpo’s goal:

16:08 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: No danger of a 0-0 here!

That goal has drawn Ecuador out a little but the South Americans were hardly looking troubled until that first shot of the game.

The fastest goal of the World Cup so far, 304 seconds in.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!!! Netherlands 1-0 Ecuador | Gakpo

16:05 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: Ecuador wing-back Preciado can continue and we resume into Dutch possession across the middle third of the pitch.

Ake looks forward and Gakpo BURIES IT!

The ball broke for the youngster, who spun onto his left foot and struck a delightful shot past Galindez at the near post!

16:03 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: A calm start for Netherlands, in possession with Ecuador putting a 3-5-2-1 in front of them to break down.

But Preciado looks hurt off the ball and play is stopped.

Kick-off!

Netherlands vs Ecuador gets underway in World Cup Group A.

National anthem time

15:56 , Marc Mayo

‘Wilhelmus’ up first for the Dutch, and you can tell how outnumbered they are in the ground by the comparative racket generated by Ecuador’s ‘Salve, Oh Patria!’.

Here come the players!

The light show and pyrotechnics are finished... time for the teams!

The only stadium that existed before the World Cup bid was won in Qatar, Khalifa International Stadium was first built in 1976.

Since then, two renovations have taken place including for the 2006 Asian Games and then for the 2019 Club World Cup - which Liverpool won.

So far, over 45,000 fans have turned up for both England’s 6-2 win over Iran and Japan’s shock victory over Germany.

Permutations

15:30 , Marc Mayo

The equation is simple for the Netherlands: win and they are qualified for the last-16.

An Ecuador victory will not quite seal the deal, as both the Dutch and Senegal could join them on six points after the final matchday - at which point it comes down to goal difference.

Elsewhere in Group A

15:25 , Marc Mayo

Senegal have downed hosts Qatar to get off the mark in Group A.

It means Ecuador may be looking over their shoulders in terms of goal difference if they fall to a defeat today.

Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng hit the goals in a 3-1 win.

Head to head record

15:19 , Marc Mayo

Dirk Kuyt is the only player to have ever scored a winner against Ecuador after two friendlies between them.

Netherlands wins: 1

Shift in formation for Ecuador

15:14 , Marc Mayo

Ecuador move to a back five to match up with the Dutch.

Jackson Porozo enters the defence, Romario Ibarra the man sacrificed.

No Depay for Netherlands

15:10 , Marc Mayo

Three changes for the Netherlands as Jurrien Timber replaces Matthijs de Ligt in the defence.

Cody Gakpo moves up front with Davy Klaassen taking up the central attacking midfielders’ spot.

Steven Berghuis also comes out, for Teun Koopmeiners.

Team news is imminent.

No Dutch repeat of Germany protest

14:49 , Alex Young

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal says his team will not be following Germany's lead in protesting against Fifa threatening players with a booking for wearing the OneLove armband during games in Qatar.

"No," said Van Gaal when asked if his team were planning any protest.

"We put a full stop after all the political issues last Thursday. We have this purpose and we're not going to have that tarnished by the actions of Fifa, or whichever other organisation.

"But I've already responded - I think that's enough."

Ecuador fans warned

14:39 , Alex Young

The Ecuadorean FA urged its fans yesterday to clean up their act after football's governing body FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings for homophobic slurs during the South Americans' opening World Cup game against Qatar.

Ecuadorean fans were heard insulting Chileans at Sunday's match, reportedly likely in response to Chile's claim that they had fielded an ineligible player in the qualifiers.

That cost Ecuador a fine and points deduction for the next qualifiers though they avoided expulsion from the Qatar tournament.

"The Ecuadorean Football Federation calls on Ecuador fans accompanying 'the Tri' in Qatar 2022 to avoid all types of offensive, insulting and discriminatory songs," it said in a statement.

"Just as our players give their all on the pitch, let's do our bit off it. Let's enjoy this football party with joy and respect."

Netherlands fans have no chill. They are a lively bunch outside the stadium. Still over an hour and a half until kick-off.

Ecuador team news: Valencia allays injury fears

13:50 , Alex Young

Ecuador fans would have feared the worst when Enner Valencia was forced off in the 75th minute after scoring twice against Qatar, but Gustavo Alfaro insisted after the game that there was “no doubt” his captain would play against the Netherlands despite an ankle sprain.

Netherlands team news: Depay pushing to start

13:44 , Alex Young

Memphis Depay is being brought along slowly by Van Gaal after recovering from injury, and could be in line for greater time on the pitch after a short cameo against Senegal.

Denzel Dumfries was sufficiently fit to start that game, and should again begin at right wing-back.
