NBL legend to farewell league at season's end

Sydney Kings coach Andrew Gaze will step down has head coach of the Sydney Kings at the end of the NBL season.

The league legend has coached the Kings for the last three seasons.

This season will be the first time Gaze has coached the Kings into the postseason.

Gaze said the decision not to renew his expiring contract was a mutual decision between himself and the club.

It is reported that Gaze has found the mental challenge of his three-year stint taxing and wants to spend more time with his Melbourne-based family.

“I think that we put the club in a really strong position, one where someone is inheriting the best job in the competition,” he said.

“My experience here is one of being really proud of what we’ve been able to develop.

“Externally other may have different judgements, but we judge it on more than wins and losses.

“To have the opportunity to work at this level of competition and with this level of talent is extraordinary.

“It’s a good system, it’s trending towards the NBA level.”

The Kings charged into the top four after signing former NBA champion Andrew Bogut.

The former number one draft pick in the NBA won the NBL’s most valuable player and defensive player of the year.

The Kings have made the playoffs for the first time in six years under the pair’s guidance.
