NBA fans have been left frustrated and Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr furious after two-time MVP Steph Curry was ruled out indefinitely with a foot injury.

Curry's foot was injured after he tangled with Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart, who was diving for a loose ball during the second half of their 110-88 victory.

After he hobbled off the court and was sent for an MRI scan, it was reported Curry sustained a sprained ligament in his left foot and he will be out indefinitely.

Forntunately for the Warriors, who hold the third seed in the Western Conference, scans also showed he had not sustained any fracture or damage of any other kind.

Further reports from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski suggested there was 'optimism that he can return by the start of the playoffs in mid-April', but a timeline would become clearer after further consultations.

Smart and Kerr had a discussion about the play on the sidelines soon after it happened, with Kerr considering it a 'dangerous play'.

"I thought it was a dangerous play. I thought Marcus dove into Steph, and that's what I was upset about," Kerr saod after the game.

"A lot of respect for Marcus. He's a hell of a player, a gamer, a competitor. I coached him in the World Cup a few summers ago.

"We talked after the game and we're good. But I thought it was a dangerous play."

For his part, Smart did not take issue with Kerr's response.

The Celtics guard agreed there was mutual respect between the pair.

"He's doing what any coach, any player, any person would do, and that's backing up his guy," Smart said.

"At the end of the conversation, he told me, 'You're one of the guys I want on my team.'"

Fans devastated by Steph Curry injury as playoffs approach

With the playoffs only a few weeks away, the absence of one of the league's brightest stars has left fans feeling blue.

Though there is some hope it could only be a short term injury, many on social media feared the worst, pulling for the Warriors star to have sustained only minor damage.

Curry's injury comes as yet another setback for the Warriors this season, who have barely been able to field the likes of Klay Thompson and Draymond Green alongside the former MVP due to injury.

Thompson made his NBA return after a two-year absence to to a torn ACL and then an Achilles injury, while Green has been in and out of the lineup this season with various minor injuries.

Celtics coach Ime Udoka said it was unfortunate that Curry had been injured, but that he didn't see anything wrong with the play.

"The play they were complaining about was totally legal and not malicious at all," Udoka said.

"One guy dove for it, one guy reached for it, and it was a loose ball there, so I don't think there wasn’t anything there to really complain about."

While Green labelled the play 'unneccessary', he also didn't think there were any bad intentions behind it.

"I'd expect Marcus Smart to make that play," Green said. "He plays hard. I can't call that a dirty play."
