'Monkeygate' drama explodes as Harbhajan levels brutal accusation
Former India Test star Harbhajan Singh has effectively called Andrew Symonds a liar and accused the Australian of being a âfiction writerâ over his version of the âMonkeygateâ controversy.
Singh allegedly called Symonds a monkey during a 2008 Test match at the SCG.
To mark the 10-year anniversary of the infamous incident, Symonds was interviewed by Fox Cricket and claimed Singh tearfully apologised to him in 2011.
âHe (Singh) goes, âLook, Iâve got to say sorry to you for what I did to you in Sydney. I apologise. I hope I didnât cause you, your family, your friends too much harm and I really apologise for what I said. I shouldnât have said itâ,â Symonds recalled.

âAnd he actually broke down crying, and I could just see that was a huge weight off his shoulders; he had to get rid of it.â
Singh was shocked to hear those comments, claiming it never happened.
The 38-year-old has always maintained he never called Symonds a monkey but rather the Hindi slur âteri maa kiâ.
Singh hit back at Symonds on Twitter.
âI thought he was a very good cricketer but Symonds has turned out to be a good fiction writer,â he tweeted.
âHe sold a story then (2008) and he is âselling a storyâ now (2018). Mate, the world has come of age in these 10 years and itâs time you also grew up.â
With Singh effectively dismissing Symondsâ recollection of events, the âMonkeygateâ controversy is set to drag on.
